KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – Sunday's series rubber match between Alabama and Tennessee provided plenty of excitement, but the Lady Vols ultimately held on in a back-and-forth slugfest to win, 7-5, and take the weekend series over the Crimson Tide.
After a scoreless first inning, Alabama (24-10, 2-4 SEC) jumped on Tennessee (26-2, 8-1 SEC) in the second, scoring two runs to chase starting pitcher Payton Gottshall before game-one winner Ashley Rogers (10-0) entered in relief and got out of the jam, limiting the damage to two runs. The Crimson Tide ran into trouble in the bottom of the third, with runners at the corners after a throwing error and Kiki Milloy made them pay with a three-run home run to put the home team in front.
Later in the third inning, a would-be three run home run was overruled as the batter passed the baserunner at first and was ruled out, though the two lead runners still scored on the play to extend the lead to 5-2.
Alex Salter entered in relief and secured the final out, but the Lady Vols were now in front. Tennessee added two more in the fourth on a two-run double to make it 7-2 and Alabama got three back in the next half-inning on a pair of home runs from
Kenleigh Cahalan and
Bailey Dowling to draw within two, down 7-5. The Tide couldn't draw any closer in the sixth or seventh however as the Lady Vols held on for the two-run win to take the series.
Six different players earned a hit in the losing effort, including home runs from Cahalan and Dowling and doubles from
Ally Shipman and
Ashley Prange. Three different pitchers saw time in the circle for the Tide, including 2.2 hitless shutout innings from
Jaala Torrence at the end to keep it a two-run game.
