TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The Alabama men's basketball team will open Southeastern Conference play when it travels to Gainesville, Fla., to take on the Florida Gators on Saturday at 5 p.m. CT (6 p.m. ET) on ESPN2. It marks the first time since the 2016-17 season that the Crimson Tide will open league play with a road contest.

The Tide enters the contest having won five of its last six games, with the lone defeat during the stretch coming in a true road game at No. 21 Penn State by two points, 73-71. The streak is even more impressive considering four of the six games were played away from Tuscaloosa.

Most recently, UA captured its season-best third consecutive win when it defeated Richmond, 90-78, back on Dec. 29 in Coleman Coliseum in what was the final game of the 2019 calendar year. With the victory, the Tide finished the month of December with a 4-1 mark.

Florida and Alabama will meet for the 145th time in series history, and only meeting this season, when the teams square off on Saturday. UA owns an all-time record of 75-69 in the series. Florida owns a 41-20 lead when hosting the Crimson Tide in Gainesville, however, Alabama enters the game having won two straight in the O'Connell Center. The last time UA won three straight at Florida came more than 60 years ago when it won three consecutive from 1955-57.

KenPom has UF winning by seven, 77-70. Personally, I like Pom's ratings later on in the season because they are based on the season to date. I don't know how accurate of a read he's been able to get on Bama considering what the team has been through with injuries, etc.

ESPN is falling in the same group as KP forecasting an 89% chance UF wins. It's a home game for the Gators so I can see their reasoning, to an extent. The road team has won the last six years in a row so I'm hesitant to buy that high of a percentage. I think the last time Bama lost in Gainesville was 2014.

UF is rated near the bottom of the stats when it comes to possession length. UA is in the top five for tempo offenses. How does that equal only putting 70 on the board as Ken Pom suggests? I guess he expects more from the Florida defense than has been seen this season. In the last three games the Tide has been averaging 95+ points per contest. Something just doesn't fit there.

I haven't seen Florida play a lot this season—a few minutes here and there over the last few weeks. Based 6n what I've seen inconsistent if the best way to describe this years Gator team so far. But good lord, winning on the road in basketball is such a tough task.

On a related note ... Chris returns to the broadcast booth today for those listening on CTSN.

Hit your dang free throws!!!!! Bama outplayed Florida all day and missed free throws to let Florida get back in it. Then turned it over and let Florida tie it to force OT.

At crunch time free throws and turnovers show up.

90-89 Florida with about a minute to go Florida with the ball. Jones just missed another free throw or it would be tied. This team has more fight in them than in the past but this game should have been over if they hit their free throws in regulation. Bama was up 9 points with 3 minutes to go in regulation.
