🏈 Alabama commitment Darius Paige's transfer comes with controversy (updated)

One of the Deep South's top-rated defensive lineman has transferred to Foley High, but not without sparking controversy. Darius Paige -- a 6-foot-3, 275-pound Alabama commitment who previously played at Washington High in Pensacola -- completed his transfer to Foley on Tuesday and watched the Lions' evening practice.

It's unclear if Paige will immediately meet eligibility requirements to play this season, said Foley coach Todd Watson. He said he contacted the AHSAA office and asked them to investigate the move and authorize whether Paige will be cleared to play this fall.

"I know 100 percent that we did nothing wrong," Watson said.

"We have not recruited the kid in any form or fashion."

Under AHSAA rules, Paige would be allowed to play immediately if his entire family leaves its Pensacola residence and moves to the Foley school district and he was a student in good standing at Washington.

Washington High assistant coach George Schellang accused Alabama assistant coach Jeremy Pruitt of steering Paige to transfer to Foley, according to the Pensacola News-Journal.

"Darius came in the office one day during the summer after (former head) coach (Mike) Smith left and sat down and told me coach Pruitt, who is the Alabama coach who was recruiting him, wanted him to go to Foley High School," Schellang told the Pensacola News-Journal.

"Basically, he said (Foley High) could take care of him academically.

"My reaction was shock and dismay that a Division I coach would tell a high school athlete that he needed to transfer, that they had people there to help."

Watson said the accusation "insinuated that we just give away grades, (and) that's obviously not the case." He strongly denied that Foley acted improperly.

"I am not going to play anyone illegally," Watson said. "We're not going to do anything to circumvent the rules."
Alabama spokesman Jeff Purinton declined to comment on the allegations regarding Pruitt, citing NCAA rules prohibiting schools from commenting on prospects.

Several high-profile Foley players, including receiver Julio Jones, defensive back Robert Lester and lineman D.J. Fluker, have signed with Alabama in recent years.

Pruitt and Watson served on the same staff at Hoover High in the early 2000s, and the PNJ story implied that relationship led to Paige being steered to Foley.

"That's all nonsense," Watson said.

Watson noted numerous Foley players have signed with other schools during his seven seasons there and that the first major prospect he coached in high school, Brandon Johnson, signed with Auburn.

Washington High recently went through a coaching change, but Watson indicated Paige's family sought Foley in an effort to help him reach NCAA academic requirements.

Baldwin County Public Schools operate on a block schedule, which allows a student to earn up to eight credits in a school year. At Washington, Paige could earn only six credits.

Watson said Paige's family initially approached him in June about the possibility of transferring.

"He said he was moving to Foley," Watson said. "I said, 'If you do, that's fine.'"

Watson said he heard nothing more about a possible transfer for weeks, although rumors of the move circulated wildly. The Press-Register contacted Watson last week to inquire whether Paige had transferred, and Watson said he had not.

On Monday -- the first day of fall practice for AHSAA schools -- Watson said Paige showed up again, voiced his intention to transfer and watched practice. Watson then told him and his family that he must withdraw from Washington and enroll at Foley to play for the Lions.
Paige apparently withdrew from Washington on Tuesday and immediately went to Foley to enroll.

Schellang told the Pensacola newspaper that Washington officials reported the transfer to the NCAA, but it appears there is no NCAA rule prohibiting a college coach from recommending that a prospect switch high schools.

Rivals rates Paige, who committed to Alabama in May, as a three-star prospect.

You do the math here.

Troy Faucheaux, Dean and also athletics director for Washington High. Where did he geaux to high school? Which team would he geaux root for on Saturday's?

I'm told the issue is allowing students to retake core classes during the regular semester that they need to make up. He's allowed to do so at Foley. What was he told about that at Washington?

well this has been the talk amongst many barner for a few years also. they better be careful with this kind of deal.

i had a barner on my treatment table the other day who was going on and on about how Alabama was shuffling failing students to foley and passing them all. i had to just stay quiet and resist the urge to perform a prostate exam.

i will never understand why barners have to be so obsessed with what Alabama's football program is doing. i couldn't care less what the barn does. i don't wish ill on them really... i just don't care. not that i don't snicker occasionally when they lose to a lesser team.

I'm concerned that there was an urge to perform a prostate exam...

I don't know why so many other people care. I tire of the annual rumors and conspiracy theories. Even if this were true, is there a way to prove it? Nope. Move on

It doesn't bother me people jump on things and carry them as far as they can: especially when they carry no weight.

Foley? Seriously, Foley?

1) Paige makes the fourth player we've had commit from Foley: Lester, Jones, Fluker, and now Paige. I don't believe Julio has graduated as of yet. I know Robert has, and I also know what a dedicated student DJ is as well.

From what I'm told this all has to do with the Dean/Athletic Director telling Paige he couldn't retake core classes he needed to his senior year. He can at Foley.

Is it a set rule at Washington this isn't allowed? I don't know.

I do know that all of this "hoopla" surrounding this transfer is coming from that Dean. He hasn't been quiet about it on the Internet. I read something in the last 24-48 hours that he was making a big deal about it on a fan site but pulled a Roy Adams: IE: I left my computer logged on to the site and someone else posted that. :lance:

Agreed Terry. According to a story I read, Washington doesn't use the block schedule like Foley does. The block schedule in short, is much like college. A student can take 4 classes a semester for a total of 8 a year. Now if a class is taken 1st semester and failed, the student can take it again the 2nd semester. Under the traditional system that so many of us had growing up, you took 5-6 classes a year, normally with a study hall or two. Several years ago, they increased the number of credits needed to graduate much like you would for your degree. The number went from 22 to 24 then up to the present 26 or 28. The block also allows for these kids to get ahead and graduate in December if wanted. The old system doesn't allow that. Under the old system, classes can only be retaken in summer school with I believe of a max of 1 core class. A kid struggling in this system has little chance.
I know there is NCAA policy that restricts a school from replying on stories about recruits, therefore, no one knows what Pruitt actually said or didn't say. He could have simply said that, in order to make those classes up, he needed to go to a school that runs on the block like Foley. He also could've told him to go directly to Foley and they'll take care of you. Foley isn't exactly a powerhouse in HS football here in the state. If BAMA wanted to steer him to a powerhouse or someone with stronger academics, why not send him to Hoover and BAMA alum Josh Niblett, Vestavia, Mtn Brook, Briarwood, or Oxford where so many Barners thought Foster was going.

A Pensacola News Journal public records request for documentation pertaining to Washington High's contact with several athletic organizations has been temporarily denied.

Escambia County School District Deputy Superintendent Norm Ross informed the News Journal late Thursday afternoon that electronic communications between Washington athletic director Troy Faucheaux and the NCAA, Florida High School Athletic Association, University of Alabama and Alabama High School Athletic Association were not immediately available.

"Please be advised there is an active investigation involving the information you have requested," Ross said in an email. "Once this investigation is concluded, the information you have requested will be available ten days after the closure date. We appreciate your patience during this time."

Faucheaux's communications have been called into question in the days after star defensive tackle Darius Paige transferred from Washington High to Foley (Ala.) High.

Donna Waters, the general counsel for the school district, followed up Ross' email on Friday morning, noting the exemption the school board was using to withhold the records was Florida Statute 1012.31(3).

The statute reads, "Any complaint and any material relating to the investigation of a complaint against an employee shall be confidential and exempt from the provisions of s. 119.07(1) until the conclusion of the preliminary investigation or until such time as the preliminary investigation ceases to be active."

The preliminary investigation cannot exceed 60 days, according to the statute.

Washington assistant coach George Shellang, who was interim head coach during the summer while the Wildcats looked for a head coach to replace Michael Smith, said immediately after Paige's Tuesday transfer that Alabama assistant coach Jeremy Pruitt pushed Paige to transfer because the Lions could "take care of him academically."

Rumors of Paige's transfer, though, were rampant on Internet message boards long before the move. Many of the rumors stemmed from a post tied to Faucheaux's account on the website rivals.com.

The post includes a step-by-step account of an alleged interaction via telephone with Pruitt. The section that has many readers upset is near the end of the 547-word rant, where the poster notes Pruitt's alleged comments about Paige's grades.

"He (Pruitt) then asked me if we could take care of Darius academically, I replied that we did have an academic plan," the post
reads. "He then proceeded to tell me that at Foley HS Darius could make up 7 core classes in one year. I informed him that I would be contacting whoever I needed to and hung up."

Sounds like it's a lot of nothing.

There's a reason I brought this over here from the news forum.

You are going to see, as you may already have, fans of a particular school point to Paige when attention is being focused on the high school transcript situation with J. Robinson.

You're right there's a lot of nothing where you sit, but on the other side of the fence there's something worth noting. When I brought this up three days ago the point was to watch the story and specifically who was behind how it was breaking; Troy Faucheaux. Now, as you can see by the article from the Pensacola media, their attention is focused on Troy as well. He doesn't have something to worry about it due to his blatant disregard of student privacy rights.

All of this story breaking on Tigerbait—the rivals LSU fan forum—with his step by step account of how he wanted this story spread.

What to take away from this thread? One, note uagrad's post about the two different types of school schedules which allows a kid to make up classes at Foley but he's not afforded that opportunity at another school: in this case Washington High.

Pruitt directing Paige to another school may not sit well with a lot of people. But, there's nothing wrong with doing so. Paige should have had his ducks in a row long ago and this shouldn't be an issue now. But, it is and here we are with a kid wanting to qualify and having a lot of ground work to make up to do so.

Trust me, you are going to see and hear comparisons of Paige and Robinson and attempts to put them in the same box. The only thing they have in common is Paige has a staff member at his former school breaking the rules by his disregard of mandated privacy rights. Robinson has a staff member that blatantly changed his transcripts so he would qualify.

It's two people breaking the rules, so to speak and both are dealing with football players. But, aside from that similarity, there's nothing that even should be breathed in the same sentence.

Terry, if it makes you feel any better, this guy won't be pointing fingers at you guys. I've already gotten tired of the "REC is behind it" and "why aren't they in Tuscaloosa?" talk.

Ultimately, if we're culpable, it'll likely come out. If you guys are, it'll likely come out. The two aren't mutually exclusive as some try to say (not you, of course). If one of us did something and gets hammered for it, it won't really matter what the other did. I doubt too many would take solace in thinking "well, the other got hammered too!"

From all I've seen/read/heard, the Paige deal seems much ado about nothing.

It's going to be hard for me to feel better when I really don't have feelings one way or another. I will readily admit I find the story(s) entertaining.

In a sense, it is very comparable to the election season we're presently experiencing. I don't have any personal issues with anyone's opinion. But, I'll admit, I find myself thinking, "you really believe that?"

In this story the biggest thing about Paige that grabs my interest is the point a person in the position Troy Faucheaux holds would go to this extreme. He's literally putting his livelihood in jeopardy based on the game of college football due to his allegiance to a particular school.

I've seen Bama fans get so caught up in stories it becomes an obsession and while I can't understand what on earth would drive them to that point I can't help myself but watch. I see people so heavily involved in the NTYF it shocks me they would exert that much effort on writers—as example—who put things out there they don't like so they organize a boycott. Roy Adams? A character than just never stops giving.

What I find particularly rich is seeing a story break and knowing what's going to follow. You'll have to admit, it is becoming increasingly easier to be somewhat physic with fan base reactions.
