Alabama's idle week before it faces Texas A&M on Sept. 14 appeared to be a gift from the schedule-makers, but Nick Saban said Wednesday he doesn't view it that way. Asked specifically if he liked that his team had an idle week just one game into the season, Saban said, "I don't really like it."
"I don't ever remember having it that way, but it is what it is," Saban said on Wednesday's SEC teleconference. "And we're going to do what we need to do to take advantage of it and continue to develop our team and use the extra practice days to try to improve and prepare for the opponents that we have down the road."
Because of the way the calendar works in 2013, each team in the SEC has two idle weeks on its respective schedule. The Crimson Tide's second open week precedes its Bryant-Denny Stadium showdown with rival LSU on Nov. 9.
Texas A&M, which opens the season with Rice, will face Sam Houston State, an FCS program, the week before it hosts Alabama at Kyle Field.
Alabama struggled to find a 12th opponent for its 2013 schedule before it struck a last-minute deal with Colorado State. The Rams juggled around their schedule to accommodate Alabama on Sept. 21, but were apparently unable to make Sept. 7 work. The Rams travel to Tulsa on that date.
"We've known it's going to be this way for a long time," Saban said. "We have a plan for it, and we'll implement it and try to improve our team with the circumstances that we have."
