I'm reading through the articles and blogs and can't help but notice all the overwhelming hate being spewed toward the Alabama program. I started thinking to my self what is going on here? Alabama has played great football when they weren't supposed to. We've showed up in games that were sure losses. Clemson, Georgia and even Tennessee was supposed to play Bama tough. Yet the Tide played great and left victorious. Now 12 weeks into the season and our schedule is all of a sudden "soft" and we are overrated big time. Just about everyone is looking at this weekend as a "test" for this cinderella team that is some how unscathed and sitting at 9-0. Unscathed from what? This blanket soft schedule? Instead of getting angry and screaming obscenities (though that is fun) I decided to find a different perspective and this is what I found. Alabama has not won a national title in 16 years. It's been 9 years since the last conference title. Roughly a decade. College football fans have a short memory. Very short. So where am I going with all this? No ones heard of Alabama! We are that team who goes through coaches like underwear trying to reach a level of success that was decades old. We are the team that has lost to Auburn six years in a row. LSU has beaten us 5 straight. Tennessee ran 7 in a row on us. We were a punching bag and for the most part, a punch line. The new cloth was purple and gold or the Orange and blue of the Swamp. So who are we? Believe it or not we are the new guy at the party. The guy that is going to take the girl and everyone knows it. Jealous of our tradition? NO. Jealous of our fan base? NO. We are moving into their territory and it makes them angry. I don't call it a comeback. No, I call it a rebirth. This is the new Alabama. And it looks good.

Roll Tide!

It's sorta all of that. I throw out a few -

The media is still pizzed that they missed out on the whole Saban to Bama dealio.

The media is embarrassed that their characterization of Saban's salary as obscene 22 months ago now looks like a bargain.

Saban is not media-friendly.

We were supposed to be irrelevant for a generation, complements of the NCAA, and we're not.

We're not sexy, like a Florida or a USC.

We're not a northern school.

We're not a big-market school.

There's plenty more, I'm sure. Oh well, they'll get used to it. :D

The Tide...12 time National Champions...21 SEC Titles...The new guy...I LOVE IT!!!!!!!!!

ROLL FRIGGIN' TIDE!!!!!!

There are very few programs or fan bases that have the perspective that Alabama has. With success literally scattered through the generations, our fan-base differs from the current A.D.D. environment in that we have seen rebirth time and time again. Crying "Johnny-Come-Lately" is their red badge of ignorance.

Bama was National Champions during the days of my Great Grandfather. My Grandfather points out the rebirth of the program when Bryant answered Momma's call, which lead to the glorious 1960's. My Father was witness to the introduction of the Wishbone and rebirth of the 1970s. I point to 1992 with Coach Stallings, which in the age of scholarship restrictions may be just as impressive. My son is now witnessing a completely different rebirth, that's ending is not yet written.

I suspect that the complaining is based mostly out of ignorance from the masses. The way Bama wins is not as entertaining to the casual spectator (Defense, 9 minute drives, Pound the rock), but respect out of the Coaches Poll shows that respect is warranted.

The one thread running through all the whining is that they all fear another Beast in the fight. Whether that call us the New-Kids-on-the-Block or THE Crimson Tide, the name they use speaks of them not of us. As long as they call us Champions I personally don't care.

One of my favorite lines fro Coach Saban's book How Good Do You Want To Be is "...they became Champions because they already were Champions."

It goes back years. Years of being humbled by Bama on an annual basis, years of frustration were supposedly ended when the NCAA put the hammer to us. Now those Bama folks have been put in their place, and schools like UT, the barn, LSU and even M$U can rub Bama's nose in it. They were looking forward to years more of this, only to wake up this season and find that Bama is once again strong, and their programs which they expected to dominate us with for years are coming apart at the seams. So they are angry. Some are lashing out at their own programs, others are attacking us. Its nice to rouse that kind of rage once again.

Good Post. We should still walk softly and carry a big herd of Elephants everywhere we go.

I like it, I love it, I want some more of it. I even enjoy the fair weather fans that are everywhere now that we are winning again.
