🏈 A bit of a statistical oddity...

We are only 2 games into the season obviously, but this is pretty interesting given the talent of our front seven...

Total Defense = UA ranks #12 (229.00 a game)
Scoring Defense = UA ranks # 1 (3.00 a game)

Here is where it gets interesting...

Sacks = UA ranks #109 (.50 a game)
Tackles for Loss = UA ranks dead last at #120 (1.50 a game)

There are a myriad of reasons why those numbers will look much different very soon. My favorite one though has to do with this fella...

I imagine those stats will even out, with or without dareus. we had good pressure when we brought pressure, bolden just got rid of it fast when we did, and thats when mistakes happeneda. on the other hand, having dareus around would make way for pressure without blitzing.

san jose doesnt count, we hardly blittzed at all, and didnt need to anyway.

but really, a 3-4 only brings pppressure when it blitzes usually. the fact that we have a guy like dareus who an bring pressure without the blitz is just a bonus.

Oh, there is no doubt the stats will even out... it is just odd to lead in scoring defense and be ranked that high in total defense, and have so few sacks and TFL (even after 2 games). With the speed on our defense, the TFL is what surprises me the most, though many of the runs have been right at the defense... not to the boundaries.

Theoretically, with how Saban likes to defend the boundaries would be the least defended. I also cannot recall a corner blitz which was so effective with Javier last year. I dunno, if i sounded a bit arrogant there i apologize, we still have alot of concerns dareus will help with. That Arkansas game may end up killing BamaDelta

I want to say there was at least one corner blitz against PSU last week. We ended up getting burned on it a bit - can't remember if they passed into the vacated area or the blitz took the corner of position on a run.

It was Dre coming off the edge and he jumped down inside on the reverse PSU ran. I bet that is something they have worked on to remind him and the others that you must stay as deep as the deepest person and don't give up containment.

the reason those numbers for sacks and tfl look bad is because this year's defense cannot afford to blitz as much as last year. several of our secondary players this year are having a harder time playing tight with receivers that arguably aren't that good. against running teams, the TFL will look better. the sack numbers aren't likely to improve that much unless Dareus's presence alone makes enough difference to offset the troubles in the secondary.

Dareus will require a double team at the line, thus freeing up a blitzer to come free. The numbers will improve just as the secondary will improve. It is ironic to be at the top in 2 categories and at the bottom in 2 others that so many people like to harp on all of the time.

Too early in the season and too few games by the entire college football universe to say that any stats have any "statistical significance". As Will Rogers used to say"There's lies, damned lies. and statistics". Have a great weekend and Roll Tide!

I want to make sure that my statement of it being a "Statistical oddity" isn't confused with "statistical significance". Not sure how it evolved into that. I'm very aware of how stats can and are skewed at times... I took stats classes at UA... and that is a Mark Twain quote that the professor recited on the first day of class.
