🏈 7/2 Roundtable - There Shouldn't Be A Playoff

And the #1 thing wrong with the way most people think about major CFB:

Screw the non BCS conferences.

Yep, the exact same thing people said about...oh, what university was that? Oh yeah, ALABAMA in 1925.

'Screw Southern football teams! They can't compete with the MIGHTY WASHINGTON HUSKIES! There's no way some little unknown team from the south could ever win a mythical national championship!' :lance:

No one wanted to give Alabama a chance in 1925 for the unbelievably moronic reason that....they weren't a big time, multiple MNC team.....& the ignorance still continues today....

Unlike most Alabama fans I want alabama to have a REAL, UNDISPUTED, DETERMINED ON THE DAMN FIELD National Championship. And there's only ONE way to get it & that's the same damn way every sport on Earth gets them, including *gasp!* "minor" college football.

:a:

As much as I like to complain about teams outside of the SEC getting too much love, I believe that the current system is the reason I like college football over NFL. In college football every game is important. In the NFL is seems that there is no reason to watch until the playoffs. I think that the BCS are money grubbing (insert bad word here). Please convince me of the value of a playoff system considering my interest in the current system

Uh, well...my #1 reason is that Alabama could win their first National Championship & as a fan of said university I would somewhat enjoy that.

Another reason would be....it's what is right/just/fair

Every sport on Earth determines who the champion is on the field...I think major CFB should join them...& Notre Dame join a conference...& every conference have 12 teams....& every conference have a championship game...& every (How to make the regular season important) conference champion play in a playoff with 4 other at-large teams

Well played sir! Does this idea include all colleges? We might not think of it but are all Division I college A teams superior to others? Should other divisions be included in the mix? Since every other sport makes the decision on the field should football teams play the best 3 of 5 or the best 4 of 7? Should we go double elimination like tennis? Maybe we should go the way that the NFL does it, one win and your out(how could there be an off day in football?) I apologize for the tone but be careful with the Du(I know that it was written uh, but I got the general tone), and be careful with the fair and just thing, it can be very subjective.

So, calling my opinion stupid is how you want this discussion to go. That's fine.

The key to successful sarcasm is to make a point — something you've failed to do in a style only described as grandiose.

The point you are clearly missing is this.

If the NCAA controls the playoffs, that means they also control all the bowl money.

If you put a system in place like some have proposed, it would mean that the monies the SEC received from the BCSNC and the Sugar Bowl last year wouldn't remain in the conference, it would be divided up between all the participants.

It means the SEC, and more importantly Alabama, losses money.

Here's a question I want you to consider.

Let's assume we went to a 16 team playoff. Give me one reason a team like Boise State deserves to have an equal share of the monies when they don't spend the same amount of money as we do? Hell, their expenses last year were a tad over 751K for their entire football program. Bama spends four times that much.
Terry, what does Spend have to do with it? No arguement, just curious about your reasoning. IMO, I'd rather be treated fairly than equally. As that relates to determining a #1, I want to see the best play the best. How that happens remains to be seen. Just keep Senator Hatch and the other Congressional cronies out of it!

I believe there is a direct correlation in the amount invested in something to the amount one should expect in return.

I see a direct correlation in the financial expenditures you see in the SEC and the amount of money the SEC as a conference makes.

I look at what a program brings to the table and what portion they should get in the end.

I see teams like Boise State, Utah, etc., as nothing more than a flash in the pan we see every few years.

If we take the Mountain West, we see a conference that has brought one team into the national picture what, twice in the last decade?

If we look at a conference like the SEC, we see a conference that not only has brought four of the last six national title winners, but also has brought other teams into the BCS games.

Why should a conference, like the one Boise State is a member of, get anything more than they already have? They received their payout. They received the national ranking based on what they accomplished and against whom.

I see a team that should be satisfied.

NOW, I've also stated in this thread I like the plus one system. I think, with that system in place, we wouldn't be having this discussion right now.

Got it. I agree. Thanks for the taking the time to explain. One thing to remember is it is discussions like these that makes the excitement build for VA Tech!
BTW, have a great 4th! God Bless America and the Crismon Tide!

*Should other divisions be included in the mix? *FCS has been in the mix for quite some time. Any FCS team that has won a single playoff has more National Championships than Alabama. FCS is waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay ahead of FBS in terms of having a real champion. All we have had in FBS/Division I this entire time is paper champions.

**You need look no further than the NFL or the FCS.

***You certainly have the right to assume whatever you like.

Here's my question to those opposing a playoff: Why are you so opposed to Alabama winning their first National Championship??

*And that's two times they were unjustly shunned from having a chance at playing for a title on the field.

**So, back in 1925 Alabama should have never been given a chance, the SEC should not be the super-power it is today & Alabama should have a football program that is on the level of Miss. St. I couldn't disagree more. You are aware that Alabama football was not born in 1892 with 12 mythical national championships? They had to go through the exact same thing Boise St./Utah/Fresno St. has been going through sans the ignorant, close-minded people that want to completely shutdown any chance of them even getting a shot at a MNC or NC because of what conference they are in. Why doesn't NCAA Basketball tell teams they aren't allowed in the tourney because they are from a supposedly "inferior" conference?? Ludacris!

***Lasik! It's awesome!!

****That would be completely up to the NCAA.

Trying to draw a comparison between the '25-'26 team and this century is going to fall on deaf ears. One, has no bearing on the other.

Unjustly left out of the picture?

They both had the opportunity to play in the BCS. They both received their due as far as national recognition. They weren't left out of anything.

I don't think they deserved to be in the picture. Period.

There's a good chance we could take half of the teams out of the top 20 last year, put them in Utah State's place, and they would be undefeated at the end of the regular season.

Just because you have a good team and you run over a lot of really weak teams in the season doesn't and get invited to play in the BCS doesn't mean a team has been "unjustly left out."
