🏈 53 years ago today GaTech quit the SEC

This is for all of those who have to listen to the bull sh!t about Coach Bryant having no scholarship limitations. Coach Bryant NEVER coached at Bama WITHOUT limitations! SEC had the 140 Rule in effect prior to 1958. The NCAA limitations went into effect in 1973.

"Bobby Dodd insisted there was no other reason he left the SEC, other than the 140 Rule. The 140 Rule stated a college program could only have 140 football and basketball players on scholarship at any one time. The teams were allowed to sign up to 45 players a year, but could not exceed the 140 Rule."

GEORGIA TECH LEAVES THE SEC

"1973 brought about the first limitations on football scholarships in order to free up money for women's sports after Title IX was passed by Congress in 1972 as part of the Equal Opportunity in Education Act. This caused the NCAA schools' presidents and athletic directors to push through a limit of 105 football scholarships. Additional reductions were made in 1978 (95) and again in 1992 which brought the limit to its present number of 85 and 63 for Division I-AA."

Didn't Tulane also leave the same year?

A good way to remember when Tulane left is that it played a small part in Bama not winning the 1966 NC. Tulane was on the '66 Bama schedule and when they withdrew from the SEC they requested to be removed from the schedule(s). Bama's 13th hour replacement was non-1-A (at the time) La Tech. This played no small part in giving the AP pollsters an excuse to drop Bama to #3 from their Preseason #1 spot before they even opened with La Tech. Bama never recovered and would not be voted higher than #3 during the season. Believe it or not they were voted #4 for four weeks!
