🏈 33 years later.....

I was 12 years old and sitting in a 6th grade classroom when our teacher told us the news. It had been my goal to play football at UA for Coach Bryant. It crushed me when he had announced his retirement a couple of weeks earlier. Then to hear he had died, brought me to tears. Several years later, I would attain a part of that goal by being invited to walk on at UA.

I was at work when people started getting phone calls-no cell phones or internet back then- but even by word of mouth the news spread quickly. As the old saying goes, 'Bad news travels fast.'

I heard it on the radio while driving on 65 North just north of Mobile. I was on my way home to Huntsville after attending my best friend's wedding in Mobile. It was quite literally like losing a close family member. Very difficult 5 hour drive.

I was 7 yrs old, just gone thru a nasty divorce with a deadbeat dad that didn't teach me anything about life, or sports.

What I know about Bear Bryant, I learned in the late 80s-early 90s, when I became interested in sports on my own.

So one story goes:

Bryant and John McKay entered a restaurant where Frank Sinatra was dining. Sinatra sent word that the men should come visit his table. Bryant sent back word that Sinatra was welcome to visit their table, and thirty seconds later, there came Frank.

Here's an SI article reporting his retirement. There's another Sinatra story in the article.

I guess we know who is the REAL Chairman of the Board. LOL
