Alabama Newsletter
B.J. Emmons, a four-star running back from Morganton, N.C. (Freedom), has committed to Alabama, a source told BamaOnline. The decision comes after Emmons took an unofficial visit to Tuscaloosa on Monday.

"He had another visit down to Alabama," Emmons' head Coach Brandon Allen told BamaOnline. "Through that process he had another opportunity to meet with the coaches and players. They had a small camp during that period time, and I know the coaches down there were extremely high on B.J. and the skill set he brings to the table. This was a visit he and his family had together, and I think that with everybody involved together as family, they believed that was going to be the best fit for B.J.

"He really likes the coaching staff and players so he wanted to go ahead and make that commitment."

Emmons, a one-time Georgia commit, opted for the Crimson Tide over Tennessee. He becomes the first running back taken in the 2016 cycle.

Emmons, a 5-foot-10, 232-pound prospect, is rated the No. 4 running back and the No. 108 overall player in the country per the 247Sports Composite rankings. His primary recruiter is outside linebackers coach Tosh Lupoi.

Good get indeed! 232 lbs of muscle barreling through a hole at only 5'10". A heavier Mark Ingram or Trent Richardson. I had said on another thread that I hoped we got this kid or the White kid out of LA.

Emmons committed to Alabama during a visit last week.

"I think BJ is the prototypical back that they are looking for," said Allen. "He's a big, strong, athletic, powerful runner and that is the type of back that Alabama wants. They want young men that can run between the tackles and one that's going to be able to break it. He certainly has the skillset that they are looking for.

"BJ also has tremendous hands," he said. "He can be a threat coming out of the backfield or putting him out at receiver. He runs great routes and I think they are getting a pretty special young man."

Emmons was an early commit to Georgia but they went their separate ways a few months ago.

"He's been back and forth," Allen said. "Several months ago we took a trip down to Alabama and BJ sort of fell in love with it and the coaching staff. This has been a pretty tough process for BJ especially since decommitting from Georgia. He had another opportunity to go back down to Alabama with his family this past week and spent a little more time with the coaches and players. He sat down with coach Saban and verbally committed to him."

Alabama was not the only school vying for Emmons' commitment.

"I certainly think that one of the other top schools was the University of Tennessee," he said. "They have been great with BJ and they've been pushing for him for quite a while. It's a great coaching staff, a great football school and a great area. I think it was a tough decision for BJ because he had grown so close with them."

It doesn't sound like Emmons will be looking around for another school any time soon.

"I think BJ is pretty set on this is where he wants to be," said Allen. "This has been a long, strenuous process for him and I think he's ready to be done with the whole recruiting process and this is where he wants to play his collegiate football. He wants to honor his word and be part of the community there and he knows that this is a special opportunity. BJ is taking summer school class now so he will be in a position where he can come in as a freshman and be ready to play."

Last season Emmons rushed for over 2,300 yards and scored more that 30 total touchdowns.

Our biggest need, and a lot of talk that we might have it.

MFBATR had the luxury of knowing that if he hit the hole, one would be there. As a freshman he stopped and looked for a hole on a play that almost cost Bama a safety. Afterwards he was better about going where the played had been called.
I still believe that is one of his problems in the NFL. He's not an escape back, and the holes haven't been there. When he has to look for a hole,he's not going to be successful.
