🏈 2 QB system...

They both were used, not just in injury situations, but injuries certainly muddied the situation. Fran would run option against a team he thought susceptible (Watts' 162 rushing yards against SoCar) and would sling it around as indicated by both QB's career stats. They are linked in their careers, but I think they only overlapped two years. I used them as an example because they were thrown out as two QB's who didn't work. They both represented the University well, and Zow was the career passing leader before being supplanted in the Saban era. BTW, Fran's offense was "multiple" and, although I know it's not palatable for many, Saban's offenses have been similar in some respects.

Well, a lot of what I'm going off of is a damn 20 year old memory and also from Zow's book. I know he said that Fran kind of fucked with both of their heads all through the spring in 2001 and into the fall. He told them there wouldn't be a 2-QB rotation and one would win, one would backup. I honestly need to read it again because I cant much remember how he recalled his senior year other than Fran still messed with their heads and told them they would both play against UCLA, but again maybe I'm wrong here but I dont remember Zow playing a single snap again with the starters until Watts got hurt late in the year.

The problem with a 2 QB system is that the other teams pretty much figure out which "system" each QB represents... running/passing. So it doesn't really help much IMHO.

I think the good teams... Or anyone with talent and a pulse... have pretty much figured out our 1 QB system.

Cover the shit out of #3 and sit on the short routes. Flush Jalen out and watch him run right... Into the sidelines.

How can anyone watch that offense and be comfortable, like playing a second QB is a bigger risk than the risk of stinking with our "normal" QB?

I love Jalen... But instead of clinching your ass hole so tightly you can't breathe, how about taking a slight risk and maybe... JUST MAYBE... Some good shit would happen?! Tua may be kinda talented... at passing?

Unless you like 100 yard passing games, then by all means let's see Jalen "air it out" against Clemson.

(That being said, all could be fixed if Saban & CO. would commit to the run..... Do it for Jalen, man!)

We can all take solace in knowing that you aren't the coach, and THANK GOD have no control over anything.

That's because coach Fran couldn't put an offense on the field where the QB didn't run the ball. If there is one player in my memory that truly got the royal shaft it's Andrew Zow. When Zow can win an SEC championship with Dubose as HC he is "nothing but a winner." Beating an outstanding Florida team twice that same year I expected Zow to keep the momentum going for 2000. Then came Fran, who I thought did a terrible job defining QB roles at the position and the fact that Zow felt so misinformed is clearly what it looked like to the casual fan as well.

Zow just got caught up in the wrong offensive scheme and Alabama got caught up with the wrong HC.

I remember him n Ms50+ having a long talk about.....
Staying outta trouble ( at a time we were having a "little" trouble with things like that)..being a leader..etc...he was a yes maam...no maam...type young man...
Wish all our players were like Zow

Well, we can't blame Fran for 2000. That was the end of the DuBose era. Zow also had an amazing team to lean on with Shaun Alexander, Chris Samuels, etc. in 1999. We found out in 2000 that those leaders in '99 (who were pretty much all recruited by Stallings) were the glue that held that team together. 2000 was a disaster for a ton of reasons, none more so than the racial animosity that crept up in the locker room, likely because of how shitty of a job the head coach did of controlling the locker room.

100% agree with your assessment of Fran's offense. Granted it worked with a Tyler Watts-style player, though. Zow needed that more pro-style offense to really excel.

Just to piggyback a little @Birdman37 , that '00 team also dealt with one coach having the title of OC but having the OL coach actually calling the plays. Said OL coach was a former roommate/ teammate of HC DuBose. What a cluster fuck that was!! Dissention in the staff meeting room was pretty intense!!

Yeah, it's been a while and those years began a stretch of Bama football that's now a repressed memory for me. Zow's development and his willingness to stick with it through good and bad developments (in regard to his playing time) is a testament to his character.

Tim
