🏈 15 for '15: College football coaches on the hot seat

There are several of these guys who would have gotten the axe from me already and a few of these guys are unfairly put on this list.

I would have given the old "heave ho" to

1. Mason at Vanderbuilt but the NAACP would be marching in Nashville. He was a bad hire, looked lost, they are unorganized and aren't competitive. Losing is ok at Vanderbilt but when your team has the highest GPA in the leauge and you can't even get them lined up right?... you are failing.

2. Norm Chow was once a great offensive mind but he took that job on the island as an early retirement and was definately on the down hill slide. I would have tried to get Navy's coach and would again.

3. The entire Syracuse football program.. their last meaningful win was against.. you guessed it Auburn

There are also a few coaches who I think have gotten a bad rap and I would like to see as an assistant at Bama

1) Al Golden has done a very good job, without cheating, fought through at least two major NCAA investigations and took over a dumpster fire.. give the guy a break. Seems by all accounts to be a solid guy.

2) Larry Fidora - runs the up tempo crap but he to has had to navigate some major NCAA landmines that were not of his own creating. North Carolina had a two year window when they were good but besides for that he is out performing the norm there.

3) Mike London has had a fair chance and has just failed adjusting to that job. He was a rock star at Richmond and I think if he could learn how to do it at a big time program under Saban for a few years he could be a great coach again.

Never understood the love affair with these guys..

1) Kirk Ferentz? He seems like a solid man but they have done less with more than any team I have ever seen. Consistently average! Look on NFL rosters and see how many Iowa players are on each roster.. he should have won a lot more. But the media has always painted him as the mid west Bear Bryant or something.. why does he have a 13 million dollar buyout?

2) Les Miles - took over a championship team with talent oozing from everywhere and got it done once but consistently has made bone head decisions, clock management and is just an embarassment in front of the microphone. I never knew why the Coon asses kept up the "Saban who" bullshit. They had to know they were just lying to themselves..right?

All I have to say about Paul Rhoades is.. it's better than 5-19.. he may be the Gus Bus's replacement..

I saw someone over on TI this morning mention he'd heard Bobby Herbert on a sports radio show and Herbert said he was thinking LSU goes 7-5 this fall. He went on to say Miles would be in serious trouble if one of the five losses is to Bama. But, said he'd keep his job if one of the seven wins were the game in Tuscaloosa.

As you may know, Herbert pronounced (A - Bear) is a blow hard that hates Bama and has never been much for Les Miles. He was very outspoken and negative about Les after the beat down we put on them in New Orleans and has never really let up. I mean, I agree with some of what he says but he has very little real insight into whats going on, he just spews venom normally. His son was a center on that team that was humiliated and if I remember right he was beat several times then benched during the game.

Probably why he is still sore about it and us..lol

@Destiny's Child Oh, I'm very familiar with Herbert. There exists a group of LSU fans who'll quickly point out Bobby doesn't speak for their fan base.

As I recall, the biggest gripe he had after the BCSNC was why Miles didn't give Lee the opportunity and stuck with Jefferson. Was it a pre-cursor to the disappointments they've had in the QB position?

I started questioning why he was so stuck in recruiting dual threat type QB's several years ago. It highlights two different mind-sets when it comes to collegiate QB's.

Do you recruit a dual threat and hope you can develop passing skills? Or, recruit a QB with passing skills that's mobile?

What school has ever fired a coach who has averaged 10 wins a season for a decade and taken his team to the championship game twice? Anyone? Anyone? Bueller?

Les is siting on ice with a long-term contract, sold out stadiums, and a top-5 recruiting class arriving on campus this week. Fanboys will grumble about an 8-5 season, even in the most competitive division of the most competitive conference in America. Excellence is never good enough, they will always demand perfection.

But LSU would have to pony up a $15 million dollar buyout to fire Les. And what top coach is going to leave a cushy job and come to LSU if Les' fine record isn't good enough?

Fanboys will grumble . . . but LSU knows who butters the toast.

Miami, with Coker? Only one i can think might fit that billing.
Coker averaged 10 wins, but only over 6 years with one championship game appearance. He had a 6-6 season, which Les has never had.

Miami fired him for imperfection and replaced him with a guy who averaged 7 wins over 4 years and got fired, too. The newest guy is averaging less than 7 wins a season. The grass is not always greener on the other side of the fence.

@red55 I've watched Miami from a distance and would have to stop and concentrate to be able to name the coaching succession after Coker. I had it in my mind they were in the final game and lost one year. At the time of the guess it just convenient to look.

The grass is not always greener on the other side of the fence.
Preaching to the choir.

I wonder if Butch Davis would take the opportunity and step back in time if he were given the chance?

Here's a thought I've had a couple of times the last few years with regard to Hebert and his opinions.

I don't listen to JOX on a regular basis. In fact, it might be three or four years since I have. Jay Barker has a show there and is the complete opposite of Hebert (based on conversations I've seen about Barker and this show.) A lot of Tide fans want him to voice an opinion. Some would probably say voice an opinion on anything.
