🏈 #1 Jax State vs. #3 NDSU - FCS Championship thread

JSU alumni here too! I was a student from 1990-92 and had a blast. Cooter's is great, but don't forget to stop by Brother's and Jefferson's too. Very nice people live in J'ville.

From what I have seen so far of the FCS, NDSU and JSU are by FAR the best 2 teams. It isn't even close. JSU has more talent than any other team in the FCS, the offense has very fast skill positions. Heck, on defense, LaMichael Fanning can't even get any decent playing time (can't even get a single suplex in!)

I saw a few NDSU games and those guys play HARD. I don't think I have seen any team this year, FCS or FBS, where every player on the team is playing with as much effort. It is like every player has the heart of Julio Jones, Javier Arenas, or Lane Bearden. If the game is close in the 4th quarter, I am afraid NDSU will win. :(

Yeah, when we were there(I was there 89-92), Cooters was just a place to go take your empty milk jugs and get them filled with beer or get your kegs. Been there a few times since they changed it into a restaurant and it is pretty good. A few good memories but mostly meh memories of Brother's, being packed like a sardine in there. I also recall when the Jefferson's location was still the Sphinx. Also, if you are in J'ville, need to go to Cecil's for a burger and shake.

Fanning got hurt in that opener against UTC, it was a season ender, which is why you haven't seen him.

#24 for them, the Pope kid, watch for him. I knew this kid in HS and he is as good of a kid as you would want to meet. I did some work at his HS and he was assigned to give me a hand. He kept asking me questions about my work, soaking up all the knowledge he could. I worked in IT then.

Recall the rivalry back when I was there was against Troy St. Also recall tshirts with slogans like, no Trojan can withstand our Cocks. My Mama Saga(campus dining hall) buddy at the time was Orlando "Cheezeburger" Adams, mammoth DT who earned his nickname in the lunch line, getting 4 cheeseburgers every time and treating them like they were individual bites.

The Sphinx must have been before my time, I think the place was abandoned when my friend Jeff bought it and started his 17 restaurant business back in the fall of '91. Cecil's burgers and shakes are THE BEST. I miss all the old fraternity houses that have been torn down too. There is no charater to any of the new ones......

We had a damn good baseball team back then also...

I think Sphinx may have had it's last year in '89, not sure but it was where Jefferson's ended up starting. If I am not recalling wrong, it moved for a short time, from the Pelham Rd location(Where Jefferson's started) to where Strut's is now, behind the Texaco on Mtn Dr., before it shut down for good.

ATO got the ball rolling on getting the old frat houses torn down. They got busted for a ton of drugs in the house plus it was right in front of a church. They lost their charter.

Back when we were there, it was named a top party school. Things have changed quite a bit since then, it is a much tamer campus than back then.

Another reason to pull for them.

Gentry was one of my favorites. He had a great game against LSU in the NC game and got some love from Herbstreit ("he's just a grinder") following this TFL at the 12:57 mark in the 4th qtr. He had a sack earlier as well:

Stopped by the stadium this morning. They are getting things setup for the game tomorrow, there wasn't much in the parking lot this morning.

NDSU truck was there, didn't see the Jacksonville State truck. The only RV I saw was at a hotel across the street from the stadium parking lot. There were a few Alabama / JSU license plates at the hotel along with several cars with NDSU flags/stickers.

Gonna be in the 40's with a nice wind tomorrow at the game, good thing the stadium is in the ground. Should help keep things a bit warmer and keep some of the wind out.

Aha! I remember Sphinx by those apartments and the Texaco.

Yeah, I remember at the Triad party one weekend one of the ATO's passed out while on the roof of the house and rolled off. He was so drunk he did not even get hurt. I am sure the McDonalds and the church were happy to see that house gone.....

Things were different then, the KAs would march in uniform through town square. You sure would not see that now.

I remember the roof top where all the girls would lay out and get suntans in the early spring. During the late 80's We enjoyed going there after lunch in downtown Gadsden at City Cafe or some name like that.

Do you mean the Courtyard Cafe? It is right behind what is now the Cultural Arts Center in downtown Gadsden, it was something else back in the 80's, the Arts Center I mean. I also recall the sunbathing on the rooftops. I also spent my fair share of time in Sparkman back then. Now it is a regular dorm but back then it was the sorority dorm. Now the sororities have their own houses. Pretty nice houses built in the last decade, I ran fiber optic to all of them from the comm building.

Don't know if any of you remember rumors about a fight between him and Jimmy Johns back around 2008-ish .. a dude I worked with had mutual friends of Nick Gentry. Said that Gentry was crazy. Like, borderline clinically crazy. He told Johns he was going to eat his baby.
