I don't know if you knew this or not. If Mississippi State would have won last night it would have been their first team championship in the school's history. There's a part of me that was rooting for that outcome--likely more so from the thought of seeing Notre Dame lose a title game, again. A hat tip to the Bulldogs for making it to the title game in back-to-back years. Being 0'fer...can't be sitting well this morning.
MSU fans are pissed at the officials, again. While I'm not one of the "blame the refs" crowd there was some non-calls that left me shaking my head. In the last few seconds of the game there was a classic example of a cross-body check from Notre Dame that went uncalled. It would have likely decided the game by putting MSU on the line. They got a point about the officiating but I find myself coming back to the missed layup--also in the last seconds of the game.
There is no comparison between the athletes we see on the men's side versus that of the women. There are only a few elite athletes in women's collegiate ball (which is a large part of the reason we don't see a lot of parity.) On the other hand, there's no comparison with the fundamentals we see from the women versus that of the men. The men have a clear advantage when it comes to athleticism, the women are leagues above the men when it comes to coaching and understanding the nuances of the game. Some of the spacing and moves I saw last night were as impressive as any I've seen.
What's the adage about asking permission versus asking forgiveness? You'll have to forgive the comparison of the men and women. It's what came to mind. Still, I hold a strong appreciation for what the women can do on the court (and diamond, mat, etc.) In some cases, a stronger appreciation for the ladies.
