šŸ“” Yes, Big Ten officials definitely hurt Georgia’s cause in championship game

They are like fighting mad. I made the same points about it going both ways, we lost on a PI last year, and they should just accept that they were beaten. I mean this guy was ready to pull a gun. And we are the crazy ones.

It's AWESOME! Wish I lived in Georgia to hear it everyday, I'd have some fun with it.

I do, but I have to say what I originally took for unbridled optimism from dawg fans now feels more like a strong sense of entitlement. They use words like dynasty and domination after a gut-wrenching national championship loss. I can't think of another fan base that has verbally done so much while managing to accomplish so little.

Costly? How so?

Both of these penalties were in the first half when Georgia was up 13-0. They held that lead going into the second half. So, how are those two penalties costly? UGA was handed their collective asses in the second half, not the first, which leaves me having a hard time understanding how it was costly? They had the game well in hand when both were called.

The punt block was in the first half...? The face mask was too? You sure?

The first play came on the first possession of the second half — an Alabama punt on fourth-and-eight from its own 24. Georgia got a great jump on the play, and blocked the punt:

Swift ran for just 4 yards on the play, but appeared to get his facemask pulled by an Alabama defender on the play:

Officials would miss the call, and Georgia was forced to punt on a fourth-and-14 from its own 29.

On the next drive, Alabama would go on a seven-play, 56-yard drive in two minutes thanks to the wheels of Tua Tagovailoa, completed with a touchdown pass to Henry Ruggs III.
Officials kept hurting UGA in the title game

I don't think Tua played in the first half, Terry.

Regardless, you basically take 3-7 points off the board for a team on a phantom offs side call, that is "costly". Unless you think points don't matter in the outcome of a game.

Giving a team 15 yards of field position and extending a drive could easily result in more points... Which I happen to think impact the outcome of a game... And keeping the ball from the other team who then has a chance to score points... Is once again, "costly" in my book.

Of all the calls that went against us that weren't made on the field, the 4th down and 4, where Ridley comes out of nowhere to catch for the tying TD was potentially the most grievous for us. Tua was most likely throwing to Najee Harris and the DB ran through Harris before the ball was caught by anyone. It was obviously passed interference and Najee goes flying through the air and is knocked to the ground 10 yards on the other side of the end zone. How do the refs miss that? If the ball is incomplete that could have cost us dearly. There was a lot to dislike when it came to big plays and the refs.

And the funny part is Najee was held literally from the start of the play until he was pretty much tackled at the end of it.

It's probably best I'm not there to hear it every day. I would probably end up becoming very cruel lol

We were in Savannah a few weeks ago (birthday trip) and we stopped off at a mall. I walked into the Lids store and noticed all the Clemson and Georgia hats and no Bama. Looked at a guy browsing some SEC Championship Georgia hats and asked, "Hm, wonder why they dont have any National Championship hats in here?" Wife was not amused. She was even less so because I greeted every person wearing a Georgia shirt with a hearty "Roll Tide." We were in Eufaula this past weekend and saw a couple wearing Georgia everything one night and they got a hearty "Roll Tide" while they responded with an even heartier "F--- You!" My wife was even less amused and screamed "That's why Georgia sucks!" I was so proud lol

See below in red.
The overturned blocked punt:
The unflagged facemask penalty: Georgia lost yardage on its ensuing offensive possession. The Bulldogs faced second-and-13 from the 33 when Jake Fromm threw a screen pass to D’Andre Swift. Swift was tackled for an 8-yard loss by Isaiah Buggs. But everybody in the stadium saw that Buggs had Swift by the facemask. Everybody but referee Dan Capron, that is.
The next possession. Still in the first half.

If there was 15 assessed, they are still in their own territory with right at 55 yards to drive to get seven, 30 or more for three.

Key word there is "could." It also could have led to a turnover, a punt, an interception...still, not costly.

They were still up 13-0 going into the half. Neither of those two plays resulted in any complaints, comments, etc. until AFTER the second half.

Bottom line, UGA held at least a two possession lead starting the third quarter and proceeded to get their butts stomped.

I've had a few conversations with some UGA friends of mine. Unlike a lot of you guys, they aren't so braggadocious--thought more than a handful have been complaining about the refs.

My only comments to them--and I've done so respectfully and not in the "in your face, @Birdman37 style"--was along these lines.

Me: We're talking about a lot of "what-if's here, right?"
Them: Yep.
Me: OKAY, let's go with that for a minute...

What if...

  • Bama had all of their offensive lineman throughout the game instead of playing subs.
  • Bama had their starting TE healthy instead of out of the game due to injury.
  • Tua played the whole game
  • Moses played
  • Jennings played
  • Hootie played
  • Miller was healthy
  • Jacobs was healthy
  • Hamilton was on the field...
Them: Okay, okay, okay...

You've lost me.

So you believe the blocked punt/off side play was in the first half? And the face mask on the ENSUING drive AFTER the blocked punt? You believe both in the first half?

@TerryP

Punt block @ 13:33 mark of 3rd quarter

Face mask @ 12:25 mark of the 3rd quater

So if your point is that those calls are less costly because they were in the first half, they were in the second half. So were they more costly than you remembered?

They recovered the blocked punt at our 20 yard line. Seeing as their kicker was making pressure packed deep kicks, they had a great chance to put 3-7 pts on the board and continue second half momentum. So yes, COSTLY might even be a light term for that missed call. Game-changing more like it.

I firmly believe had Alabama been on the other side of that coin, you'd see things differently.

Your whole point is based on "could've" or "what ifs". No points were taken off the board, and a few yards of field position is hardly a point worth making that the game turned on that premise. Doesn't matter what side you look at it from, nothing catastrophic happened as a result. As mentioned, calls were missed on both sides of the ball. of course the winners have lesser of an issue with it, but to place blame on the refs is impotent at best.

Nothing catastrophic happened... for Alabama. I would say going from having the ball on the Alabama 20 yard line with a bad ass kicker and all the games momentum, at a time when Alabama had nothing to feel good about, to having a 40+ yard field position differential is a hell of a big deal.

The calls were missed on both sides is true in EVERY SINGLE GAME. There are calls that matter more than others though... Alabama got the benefit of the doubt in some very marginal situations.

I certainly am not complaining but have the objectivity to call a spade a spade.

I'm not grasping why you think Georgia gets the ball on the Alabama 20 when they are even saying we had a guy moving, therefor it's still another chance to kick, not give them the ball right there.

This could also be true. In which case, the refs double fucked Georgia. Not only did they miss a call on Alabama, they actually called a non off sides on Georgia. So instead of Alabama moving backwards, they move forwards. 10 yards and momentum. Very bad officiating

It was a missed call, but I feel like we never gained momentum in the second half on that call or any. They still scored against us and kept us from truly taking momentum on offense. Our defense is what saved us.
