pretty good piece on Yeldon and Henry.

Back in January Yeldon was getting five-to-one odds to win the Heisman. Here we are in May and his Heisman odds have fallen to 14-1 behind Georgia’s Todd Gurley who is at 12-1 odds and leads the SEC on Vegas’ big boards to win the award.

The likely reason Yeldon’s odds have slipped since January is the emergence of RB Derrick Henry(20-1) in the All-State Sugar Bowl against Oklahoma. Henry’s performance in the BCS game along with his performance in Tuscaloosa against Arkansas, both 100 yard games, helped to catapult him into Alabama spotlight but his 43 yard run against Oklahoma on a national stage has set the tone for this off-season.

That said Yeldon is the better consistent back for the Crimson Tide with six 100+ yard games in 2013 hence the reason his odds were so high in January. If Yeldon wins the award he will be the first RB to win the award since Mark Ingram in 2000.

Yeldon’s numbers over the past two seasons have been solid to say the least with 2343 yards and 26 touchdowns the bulk of which came last season. To solidify his chance to win the Heisman he’ll have to carry the rock a few more times compared to last season’s 207. Ingram had 271 carries his Heisman winning year compared to freshman Trent Richardson’s 145 touches.

The amount of touches will be key to Yeldon’s Heisman campaign, period. Last season Alabama had five other backs with 20 or more carries. It’s a beautiful thing when you have a stable of running backs that deep but it’s not so pretty when you are on the march for a Heisman campaign.

Either way a win is a win and the bigger picture is the national championship for Nick Saban. If Saban can keep Yeldon healthy and utilize him just a bit more its safe to say that Yeldon will be the front-runner for the Heisman in 2014.

Betting Statistics

In 2012 3.45 billion was wagered in Nevada alone legally and its estimated that $380 billion was wagered illegally according to the American Gaming Association.

Nevada’s sports books profited $170 million in 2012 out of the $3.45 billion wagered. Say what you want about Vegas but it looks like some people won some pretty hefty sums that year. Still a million is a million to me either way and I wouldn’t mind just getting 10% of what they profited.

It’s estimated that 2/3′s of all sports bets are not college related but the FBI estimates that more than $2.5 billion is wagered on March Madness alone.

Who has a better chance at winning the Heisman, Yeldon or Gurley? I'd go Gurley because he gets the most of the carries at Georgia. Yeldon will have to split with Henry and some of Drake if he can get his head straight.

@PhillyGirl I like Davis, a lot. I've watched him since he was on our radar recruiting. That said, there's one thing I wonder about—how much of the load he's going to carry.

If I recall this correctly UofSC lost over half of their starting OL from last season. I know they're going to be relying on a frosh, and it seems like a RS sophomore as well.

Most of their losses came from the defensive side. They still have a lot of talent up front. I think he'll carry the load quite a bit to be honest with Thompson behind center and he really doesn't have the talent to throw to like Shaw did. All that said they are a Spurrier team and that guy is a loose cannon.

As people here can attest, I've been on the Thompson bandwagon for awhile. He's a lot better QB than most realize.

There hasn't been a lot of publicity for the receiving corps in Cola—gut tells me Pharoh Cooper is going to turn some heads before the year is out.

Gurley has to stay healthy to win the Heisman. I don't know if he'll be able to do that with as much as they feed him the ball. They have a stable of backs like we do now, so we'll see if that takes off some of the load at the end of blowouts and such. Yeldon is as consistant as anyone I've seen in a while. He quietly goes out and gets his yards and go home. He averages over six yards per rush, which is remarkable. The media will be back on him once the season starts and him, Drake, and Henry get going.
