Scheduling could be Auburnās biggest obstacle in making tourney.
Auburn coach Bruce Pearl described the challenges he faced scheduling top 25 opponents on Paul Finebaumās show Wednesday from the SEC meetings in Destin.
An ongoing issue for Bruce Pearl in building Auburn into a top tier team program is scheduling.
Pearl is confident Auburn has what it takes to make the NCAA tournament this season for the first time since 2003, but the teamās non-conference strength of schedule could be an issue.
"My challenge at Auburn has been scheduling more so than anything else,ā Pearl said.
Pearl likes how his non-conference schedule is shaping up for the 2017-18 season with games scheduled against UConn and Dayton, but it might not be enough given what Kentucky athletic director Mitch Barnhart told the group of assembled SEC basketball coaches this week.
Barnhart, who joined the committee two years, shared an inside perspective about the process and underlined the importance of a teamās record against top 25 opponents.
āWhen I was at Tennessee I had the chance to play a few top 25 teams because we got Kansas, or we got Texas or we got Memphis or a few others cause it was Tennessee,ā Pearl said Wednesday during an appearance on Paul Finebaumās show from the SEC meetings in Destin. āAt Auburn I just have not been able to get those marquee games in the non-conference. We try, but we just havenāt been able to. Thatās a challenge for us trying to get out of the bottom.ā
