TUSCALOOSA | Shelton State Community College coach Madonna Thompson and Texas Tech coach Kristy Curry have interviewed for the vacant head womenās basketball coaching position at the University of Alabama, The Tuscaloosa News has learned.
Thompson, 39, was a player on Alabamaās 1994 Final Four team and participated in four NCAA Tournament appearances at UA. She has been head coach at Shelton State for 15 years, winning nine Alabama Community College Conference championships ā including seven in the last eight years and two in a row.
Shelton State finished the regular season undefeated in 2012-13 and ended with a 33-1 record and made it to the quarterfinal round of the National Junior College Athletic Association tournament.
Curry has been head coach at Texas Tech for the last seven years, leading the Lady Raiders to three straight 20-win seasons and NCAA Tournament bids in 2010-11 and last season. She has compiled a 130-98 record at the school. In her previous head coaching stop, Curry led Purdue to seven straight NCAA Tournament appearances and a 179-51 record that included a trip to the national championship game in 2001.
Curry signed a five-year, $3.675 million contract in April of 2011, according to a report by the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal. The deal runs through the 2015-16 season and guarantees Curry $750,000 in the 2013-14 season.
Wendell Hudson was reassigned last month to an administrative position in the UA athletic department after five years as head coach.
Alabama went 68-87 under Hudson, including a 14-64 record in Southeastern Conference play.
