šŸˆ Winter Graduation - 31 Student Athletes (23 football)

Via Bill Battle Academic Center Helps Athletes Win Off The Field – Dialog

Quote is from Jon Dever, associate athletic director for athletic student services.

ā€œThis past December, Darren Lake, a defensive tackle, graduated and became the first person in his family to get a college degree. He is from a little town out in rural Alabama and had 52 members of his family show up at his graduation,ā€ he said. ā€œHe came up after he graduated and hugged me like I was his mom. Those kinds of things are what we are here for.ā€

Impressive list of graduates!

It's hard to understand when you're 17-18 years old... But I wish kids would be more open to redshirting at that point. I look at these 3 guys graduating with Masters Degree's and I see such an opportunity. Then you see guys like Ryan Anderson and Alphonse Taylor who've graduated and have a year left, and assume they will be very close to fulfilling their Masters as well. The NCAA is allowing every kid on scholarship to take a limited amount of credits every summer (I believe it's 6)... But 6x5 is 30... That's an entire year's worth. That is awesome.

EVEN AT ALABAMA - The chances of a guy making a legitimate career out of football aren't that great. Why not embrace the redshirt year, have a good career, and leave with a Masters? And if you turn out to be one of these studs who can redshirt, play 2 years, then leave... Then even better! Sh*t, you'd probably up your stock by having less mileage anyway. (Marlon Humphrey?!)

All these kids are so hypmotized by playing their freshman year and it doesn't make sense. The biggest reason is because of this question - Will you have a bigger impact your first year, or your fifth year? Ultimately, that is the football experience you are deciding on... But academically, redshirting and getting a Masters should be these kids' goal IMO.

Best case for an educational goal would be to grayshirt and take some basic courses at a community college that fall, enroll in the Jan. semester at UA, RS, and then play 4 years. It would give the student 5.5 semesters on scholly. Leave school with a Master's and minimal loan repayment.
