An 18-point lead had shrunk to three.

With 12 minutes left in the fourth quarter, Clemson held a lead of just 28-25 over 3-8 South Carolina, which lost its previous game to a school named The Citadel.

The combination of the No. 1 Tigers' narrow 34-25 win over South Carolina and No. 2 Alabama beating Auburn for its ninth straight win could lead to a change at the top of the College Football Playoff rankings.

The new rankings will be released Tuesday night.

Clemson has been No. 1 since the initial Playoff rankings were released Nov. 3.

The Tigers beat then-No. 16 Florida State, 23-13, Nov. 7 and improved to 12-0 with the win over South Carolina.

However, here are Clemson's last three games:

— A 37-27 win over 3-6 Syracuse Nov. 14, a game the Tigers led by just seven midway through the fourth quarter.

— A 33-13 win over 3-7 Wake Forest Nov. 21.

— The game against South Carolina.

Alabama has a loss. Clemson doesn't. But the Tigers have just two wins over ranked teams. The Tide has five, including three against top-10 teams.

Alabama lost, 43-37, to then-No. 15 Ole Miss Sept. 19. The team has outscored those other five ranked opponents by an average margin of 31-14.

While the Tide held a fourth quarter lead of just 19-13 over 6-5 Auburn Saturday before pulling away for a 29-13 win, Alabama beat then-No. 17 Mississippi State, 31-6, and then-No. 2 LSU, 30-16, in its previous two games against FBS opponents.

The Tide will play Florida in the SEC championship game on Saturday.

"We're playing the best team in college football," Gators coach Jim McElwain said.

Alabama is a 17-point favorite over Florida, which lost, 27-2, to Florida State Saturday after pulling out an overtime win against lowly FAU in its previous game.

Clemson, meanwhile, will have a chance to make a statement about the caliber of its team.

The Tigers will face North Carolina in the ACC championship game.

The Tar Heels have won 11 straight games since a season-opening loss to South Carolina.

North Carolina was No. 14 in the Playoff rankings last week. It will likely move up to at least No. 10 after No. 7 Baylor, No. 10 Michigan, No. 11 Oklahoma State and No. 12 Florida each lost either Friday or Saturday.

In the meantime, it's possible the Tigers could drop as low as No. 3 in the new Playoff rankings behind both Alabama and Oklahoma, which was No. 3 in last week's rankings.

Like the Tide, the Sooners have five wins over ranked teams, including three in their last three games.

Oklahoma beat then-No. 6 Baylor, 44-34, Nov. 14, then-No. 18 TCU, 30-29, Nov. 21 and No. 11 Oklahoma State, 58-23, Saturday.

It's worth mentioning, though, that Baylor lost standout quarterback Seth Russell to a season-ending injury prior to the game against the Sooners while TCU faced Oklahoma without star quarterback Trevone Boykin and Oklahoma State played most of Saturday's game without starting quarterback Mason Rudolph.

Either way, Oklahoma likely locked up a spot in the Playoff with its win over Oklahoma State.

Alabama and Clemson will both be in with wins Saturday.

The same can be said for the winner of the Big Ten championship game, which features No. 4 Iowa vs. No. 5 Michigan State.

Seemingly, the only challenge for the Playoff committee if Alabama and Clemson both win is figuring out where all four Playoff teams should be ranked.

No. 1 will face No. 4 in Miami. No. 2 will play No. 3 in Dallas.

"I feel like we'll be hard to beat," Tide linebacker Reggie Ragland said. "If guys keep executing the way that we know we can and guys keep paying attention to coach [Nick Saban], then we're going to be a hard team to beat."

Yeah, of each of the other teams in the top 10, OK is the one I dread playing the most.

If OU is the best team remaining then its unlikely anyone other than Bama would beat them. So the question is... when do we want to play them ? I havent looked at the schedule, but I'm assuming the most time between games for preparation will be the first game of the playoffs.

Maybe its best Bama face them first if the first game allows for the most time to prepare ?

Rumors suggested CNS overworked the players trying to prepare for two games before the first game last year. I think CNS comes up with a better plan in his second playoff.

I will get slammed for this, but it wouldnt hurt my feelings if we dropped to number 4 after this weekend. Reason being, I dont think we match up well with oklahoma. Right now they are clicking on all cylinders and I do not think we could/will keep up with them scoring wise. Truth be told, the SEC has been very weak this year qb wise. Arkansas, Ole Miss and Miss State probably have the best qbs we have played and Miss. State's line was awful. I think a good duel qb has and will give us absolute fits. On the other side of the ball, our o-line has struggled to give coker time to look and at times, coker's timing with his receivers has been off. Yes I know he is only been asked to be a game manager, but to beat oklahoma; I think we would have to score in the 30's and coker would probably have to throw for at least 250 if not 300 yards. I just do not think that could be done against a good defense who wouldnt have to cheat that much if at all to control our ground attack and their defense is fast enough to play our screen game. That being said, I hope I am wrong and will gladly eat my words.

You're giving Oklahoma's defense way too much credit.

I'd contend that Arkansas or maybe even Tennessee (now, not the beginning of the season) would beat them.

About half our team remembers that Oklahoma loss in the Sugar Bowl a couple years ago.

I think we'd clown-stomp the Spooners.

All three very good points and I'll admit the last one is the only one I've thought of.

I didn't think it was 1 vs 4 in Miami and 2 vs 3 in Dallas. I thought they give preference to the number 1 seed and then the number 2 seed. Dallas is closer for Alabama and Miami is closer for Clemson. I thought we would be a shoe in for Dallas as long as we didn't get jumped?

You're right. The #1 seed gets preference when it comes to location. If it ends up with Clemson at #1 and OU at #4, the Sooners are headed to Miami. If OU is in any other place (#2 or #3 in this scenario) they are playing in Dallas.

Realistically, if they give the location preference to the #1 team there is no preferences given to the #2 team: they are where they are, ya know?

I'm still leaning towards 1) CU, 2) Bama, 3) B1G winner, 4) OU.

Only the #1 seed has a consideration. The other game is by default.

Probably the easiest decisions the committee will ever have to make are going to be this year's playoffs.... assuming nothing too crazy happens in the SEC and ACC title games.

And also, Dantonio, you're cool and all, but go Hawkeyes. Sparty is the only team in the playoffs that actually worries me.
