About a year ago a poll of Southeastern Conference Scout publishers asked which true freshman would be the biggest help to the team that publisher covered. I almost listed linebacker Reuben Foster, but decided the competition with C.J. Mosley and Trey DePriest in the middle would limit his opportunities.

In truth, the Crimson Tide’s depth is such that one would think it would be hard for any freshman to make a great impact.

A year ago I ended up listing tight end O.J. Howard as the freshman who would have the biggest impact for Alabama. That turned out to be a pretty good guess. Picking defensive end A'Shawn Robinson or tailback Derrick Henry would have been pretty good, too.

This year, particularly, it is not a level playing field in picking a freshman most likely to make the biggest impact for Bama. One or two who came in for spring practice are likely to be starters at critical positions – Tony Brown at cornerback and/or Cameron Robinson at left tackle.

Although he’s not likely to start, another freshman who looked very good in Bama’s A-Day Game was inside linebacker Shaun Hamilton.

A handful of freshmen who arrived this summer have gotten good reviews from Alabama players.

Marlon Humphrey, like Brown a cornerback who is also a track star, seems to be in the thick of the battle for a job. Is it possible that Bama could cure its 2013 cornerback woes with two freshmen? Probably not since returning players Cyrus Jones and Bradley Sylve are also reported as doing well in fall camp.

The Tide is loaded at defensive end, but a freshman is reportedly turning heads. It shouldn’t be a huge surprise that Da’Shawn Hand, considered the nation’s best defensive end prospect last year, is showing he can make an impact.

We have also heard that nose tackle Josh Frazier has been very impressive.

In an interview earlier this year, junior linebacker Reggie Ragland said that outside linebackers Christian Miller and Keith Holcombe are men to watch.

In addition to Robinson on the offensive line, we’ve heard very good things about guardRoss Pierschbacher. And two freshmen are behind junior Ryan Kelly at the critical center position, J.C.Hassenauer and Josh Casher.

That points up one of the elements of a freshman being able to make an impact. Not only does he have to be very good, he also has to play a position where he has an opportunity to get substantial playing time.

Alabama’s crowded wide receiver corps includes a freshman who has been mentioned by several players, Derek Kief.

There’s also a special teams player who has received much praise, punter J.K. Scott.

If I get the poll question again this year, I’m probably going to go with Tony Brown just because he’s in a position to make highlight plays. I would also be tempted to vote for walk-on linebacker Gussie Busch, because if he won he might invite me to the celebratory keg party.

I want Miller to be that impact player because his speed at OLB helps with the HUNH, but I really think Hand will be the impact player, maybe Frazier. Of course, like the article says, JK Scott certainly will too. CNS has already said he's the best punter on the team. Well, take that FWIW. He shanked a punt in practice the other day; it only went forty yards.

I'm going with Tony Brown. He's been lights out from what I've seen and only heard great things from the closed practices. Cameron Robinson will be big for us, but just not sure how you track being an impact on the line, other than making your block.

Agreed re: Brown, I have only heard good things. And we need a big play maker to step up down the field, I think this is his moment to shine.

A lot of casual fans will think Cam has become an impact player if/when he pancakes someone early.

Agreed. It's hard to get pumped about the big uglies as they are always overshadowed by the skilled players. When I think impact I think a sudden game changing type play or move. Those things are reserved for the skill players as they deal with the ball 99.9% more than a lineman does. I think Cameron will be huge for us, but as far as game changing type, I'm going in with Tony Brown.

I'm going to go outside the box and say it will be punter JK Scott. If he has the hang time on his punts and distance that has been reported, he will flip field position and pin teams deep into their own territory. Doing this limits a playbook considerably. Putting our defense on the field with a limited playbook going against the opponent spells TROUBLE!!

Great point on Scott. Cody Mandell was an underrated weapon for us, and if Scott can give us a semblance of what Cody did he will be valuable indeed. If he does not do well, that will also be a big impact, a negative one. I will go with Tony Brown or Cam Robinson. Some talented DL coming in, but there are too many talented returnees for the frosh to have a huge impact.

I initial thoughts when I read this question were that it would have to be someone in OL or DB positions. I like what I have heard about Humphrey and Brown at the DB, also I think Robinson could have a big impact on the OL. I have to leave it at one of those 3.

As I said in another thread, JK Scott and its not even close. Unless Cam has something to say about it and he certainly has the opportunity as it looks like he's gonna be the LT.

Brown might eventually win the starting job this year, but I'm not gonna put any money on it. As weird as this sounds, there is some talent in front of it that is going to have to make some mistakes for him to get past them or injuries.

Yes, I know the defense step up and help win the game. BUT, if it wasn't for J.K. Scott punting who knew what would had happen. I would give it to him. Like Eli said during the game people kept saying that all those long punt was because of the thin air in Denver . Well it not thin here and he still getting great punt off.
