🏈 Who replaces Hightower?

In the last game, we slid Anders over to Reamer's old position, put Reamer in Dont'a's slot, and brought Upshaw off the bench for the JACK role.

I dont think that will be the answer. #13 didnt look very strong in the middle IMO.

Much like when COdy went down last year. Orginally Gentry was put in and the next game it was much improved play with #99 going to nose.

Terry,

Do you think this is the permanent answer or was that just patchwork to get thru the game?

It's hard to say.

Jerrell was considered a good possibility to emerge as the back-up for Dont'a. So, a lot is going to ride on how he does when he gets back in the rotation after the Ole Miss game. He's got the ability, and the staff did have an impression that he was going to be able to contribute this year before he dug his grave this summer.

There are some aspects I like about that lineup.

Reamer is a good run defender. He's not the athlete we had in Dont'a, but he's a solid football player.

Moving Anders to the SAM position gives us a lot of speed on the outside and may end up giving us another blitz package.

We'll see how Upshaw does in the JACK role. There's been high hopes for him to fill that role at some point. Can he step into the role and do as well as Anders has been able to so far? That's left to be seen.

All that said, Chris Jordan who has technically been backing up Ro may have something to say about this...

Josh Chapman started against Tennessee last year. It was the Tennessee week that Cody was diagnosed with the knee injury.

LOL are you sure Terry?

Because I thought he was playing at that position but someone corrected me immediately. :lance:

Well, uh, yes, I'm sure.

But, if you would like a second opinion, here's one.

Hightower was carted off the field before halftime, but rejoined his teammates on the sideline, using crutches, for the end of the Crimson Tide’s first Southeastern Conference victory of the season. He was injured on a second-down play while trying to avoid a cut block from Petrus, and was replaced in the lineup by sophomore Courtney Upshaw. The Alabama coaching staff moved senior Cory Reamer to Hightower’s weakside position, moved senior Eryk Anders to Reamer’s normal position on the strong side, and inserted Upshaw to replace Anders at the ‘Jack’ linebacker spot. Junior Rolando McClain, the team’s leading tackler, remained at his middle linebacker position.

I think Cody went down in the Ole Miss game last year and Gentry filled in that game. Chapman took over the next game (guessing UT) and filled in nicely. That was my point at least. I could be wrong, however.

Reamer does pretty good against the run, but he got sucked in against UNT on a pass play and it gave them their only TD.
He gets too damn many penalties for my taste also. But, if he's all ya got...

That's not exactly true.

Reamer did step closer to the line, but he did so to cover a crossing route one of their receivers (TE?) was running in front of him. The CB on his side jumped the same receiver route and was beaten.

In the North Texas game, it was Barron that jumped the crossing route and left the wheel route wide open on the sideline.

Unless Bama was in man coverage, and they weren't judging the other defensive players, Reamer was exactly where he should have been.

Thanks to the SEC digital network, I've dissected everyone one of our mishaps in the secondary. Barron's been out of position a few times, but he's showing great signs of improvement. Very rarely has a linebacker been out of position.

I will say that our LBer play has been even more impressive this year than last.

Easily, part of the explanation is that we are thus far only playing guys who have been in the system at least one year and not having to rely on any newcomers.'

But, it appears Saban made two upgrades in his staff with Sunseri (sic) and Willis. I am one who believed, and still do, that losing Thompson will impact our recruiting at least some (if not necessarily hurting ours then by helping Tennessee's). But it appears on the factors of position teaching and game preparation and adjustments the two new guys are indeed a step up from Thompson and Steele - and the latter was pretty darn good.

i think hightower's absence will affect our secondary calls more than anything.. he and ro both pick up alot of slack that allows robbie green and mark barron to hunt heads..

i think hightower will be replaced by the nickle and dime more than anything..
