🏈 What Will Our D Look Like vs Old Mississippi?

I'm new around here, but some of you may know me from the old Tidesports, Wooly, SECRant, etc. As much as I love football, I never played, and I'm not an X's and O's expert. I'm curious if some of you who know the formations better than I can give any input on how we'll line up against ole miss.

I watched some of the Ole Miss/Fresno game last night. It doesn't appear that ole miss will be much of a run threat against us. The O-line looked average and their RB is smallish. It seems to me that we could play dime against them pretty much the whole game. I think 4 linemen and a LB can hold their own against ole miss' O-line. That would have 6 DB's on the field to handle all the quick throws, and they'd be faster to the RB when he does get to the second level.

Is this the plan, or am I stupid?

IMO we will be in nickel or dime the entire game, except maybe for short yardage situations. If they use two tight ends we will match up.

I am no defensive guru but I expect Bama to open in either the "nickel" or "dime" package

I really expect dime simply because it takes an ILB out in favor of another DB

I also agree with your assessment that we should be able to handle their run with the front guys.

I will also go so far as to say if OM can run against our DL and we have to go to base to stop them it will be a long day for the good guys

I see us opening up in nickel. If we start experiencing some issues with one of our backers going against a back or slot, then we come in with dime personnel. All it is, is a chess match really. You go big, we go big. You go small, we counter and go small.

I know their QB looks flashy, but the Bear used to say the best QB in the world can't throw crap when he is on his back. We just need to settle down and realistically pound them hard with a grinding game. If we can keep possession time in our favor we will win without being flashy.

Hi Teague and Welcome. I was a former tidesports/ wooly poster as well (under a different name).

I think you will see a bunch of dime and nickel as has been stated in here. Saban said that they would be in nickle practically the whole game. Things you may see that will be a little suprising is more Dillan lee, Rashad Evans and Ryan Anderson this week. I believe Saban will go athletic and Lee, Evans, Tim Williams and Ryan Anderson give us more athleticism in space.

I think defensively we will be ok. My concern is on the other side of the ball and I hope we just wear them down up front. I want to RUN, RUN, RUN, RUN! Maybe throw 15 passes that are all roll outs. Coker seems to make better decisions and more accurate throws when he is on the move, so let's play to his strengths.

TCU was in attack mode all night and their front four is what dictated that game. Wallace had a hard time finding anybody open due to having seven drop in the secondary

Granted, I'm not a football coach nor expert. But I've been saying for years that one of the main reasons we have so many problems with these type offenses is due to lack of penetration. There's no offense ever invented that thrives with defensive guys getting constant penetration in backfield. You have to bust their butts and then bust it some more. Sitting back waiting on them to make a mistake is like a slow death. They will beat you by nickel and dimin' you to death then bust one of their chunk plays.

No I agree about getting pressure up front and then dropping into coverage you just have to keep your eyes on the QB so he doesn't continually take off on 12 yard scampers and nickle and dime you that way. You need a spy on him that is playing the middle. That's why I think you see Dillan Lee and Tim Williams they are good in coverage and fast enough to track these qb's on broken plays.

I remember a Cam Newton that absolutely torched our defense precisely because of overrunning the play and getting past the QB which sometimes happens with pressure.

there is a happy medium to this approach. I'm not sure if the Kelly kid is a running threat. If not, rush him. always gotta watch that quick screen/bubble screen tho... can be a killer play with a guy like Treadwell.

Kelly is relatively mobile. I think we have to maintain containment with the front and leave the DBs on the receivers. That is my biggest fear is Kelly starts scrambling and DB engages him and he hits an open guy. They have plenty of weapons that can catch and move with the ball.

On the first part Same here. She said it was becuase she was trying to maintain her tight end, I told her her that her wide receiver was nearly worn out... and smacked her in the blind side...
Second part. We will NICK and DIME them to death!

My concern is that we will play conservatively on D and try not to give up any big plays. We will keep everything in front of us and let them have the short throws. I would rather see us get in every receivers grill, and send one more guy than they can block and make the QB throw it quick and get put on his butt.

Sounds like you have been watching Bama play for several years. I will be absolutely amazed if that isn't the defensive game plan in a nutshell

Here is a possible scenario: OM, with its OL dinged up and missing Tunsel, resorts to quick underneath throws early in the game in the expectation that they will not be able to protect their QB long enough for deep throws. We play relatively soft early on, but then realize that they are struggling in pass protection and lock down on the short throws. Can anyone see that happening?

Everything else aside you have to think Kelly will only have a 2-3 second window to throw conventionally. Now they can gain some time by rolling him out but you take away 1/2 your options if you roll out every time. I think it would be nice to see us attack their o-line as it is going to be patch work. I refuse to believe they can block this Alabama d-line straight up until I see it myself. So yeas I think we bring reasoned heat with the front and let the dime package clog the middle of the field as I think that is going to be his target area.

I do not think our base LB'ers can cover the middle against the athletes that OM has. I think with Harrison coming in for injured Mo is going to be big and it will be big early as I think they will work Core and Engram in the middle until we shut them down.

Ole miss didn't play HUNH last year against us. It took a little while to adjust. Their OL is hurting big time, so they better play some HUNH.
