Rick, I am not trying to say that you are old, but I am pretty sure that the first game you saw in person was the 1926 Rose Bowl game against Washington. I remember going to th train station to see you and Crimson Pirate off. I was a mere child at the time.
The first game that I saw in person was at Crampton Bowl in Montgomery in 1953 against Southern Miss. Red Drew was Alabama's coach then. I was seven years old. Southern Miss had a pretty good team, led by Jimmy Davenport, who later played 3B for the Giants for a good many years. Southern Miss beat us 7-2, when we blocked a punt late, and it rolled out of the end zone before we could cover it.
The first TV game that I remember seeing was the 1959 Liberty Bowl game against Penn State. This was Bryant v. Engel (Paterno was an assistant on that staff.) We could manage only a field goal, and Penn State got a touchdown off of a fake field goal, defeating us 7-3.
