🏈 what i expect to see next year from our offense

i am looking at 4 factors here..

1. new QB

2. an experienced O line

3. two of the most punishing RB's i have ever seen.

4. an experienced defense


i see us going back to 2008 form.. i am talking walk up to the LOS and point at the hole we are about to pound..

i see us milking the play clock once again

and i also see our rarely used play action passing game to be extremely dangerous.. with two 3 year starters at receiver, and a potential trigger happy QB..


all these things are good because this is the game that our coaching staff was put together to coach.. this was our game plan we had when we were at our best..

GM's TD to INT ration...39 vs 10...74%.

First, Ill give you some numbers.

in the last two years, our ratio of passes to runs have gone like this:

09 : 37.5% pass 62.5% run

'10 : 44% pass, 56% run

Now the problem is that these numbers ignore football trends. For instance, NFL teams that run prostyle attacks tend to be 60% pass and 40% run. Some are closer than that to being balanced depend on the kind of back. However, notice that most NFL teams that make it to the playoffs have dominant QBs, where as most teams that have epic running backs are at the bottom of the league.

Thats the NFL, however, the SEC landscape is increasingly becoming more talented, and the talent disparity is being reduced.

The reason that running the ball is getting harder is not just because of the line. It is because when you run over half the time, you can stack the box on first and second down, slow down the run, and zone blitz on 3rd and long to create a 3 and out. Its a very simple strategy people are using against our offense.

So when people say we nneed balance, I can just say we need to pass it a helluva lot more than we do.

PS: I know 09 was an undefeated season, but that was mostly because of our D.

IF you are a tourist, and you are in Charleston—with the caveat it's tourist season—I WILL shoot you. Wear orange...it'll be my only defense on self defense arguments.

Total offense average last season- 444 yards per game.

Rushing offense - 183 per game...roughly
Passing offense - 261 per game.

Going back one year...

Passing - 187 per game.
Rushing - 215 per game.

That's an average of 185 per game passing. 224 Passing.

One of the best QB ratings in NCAA.

Wrong on this one my friend.
An average of...no, you do the math. Our yardage on offense has been from the passing game.

In my opinion, we won the NC because we pounded the football which allowed us to control the clock. Then we played some hella D. I think we will have that type of D again next year.

Indeed, there were problems last year. I can just say that it should not have been that way. Ofcourse, I do not feel a giant need to go as far as the ratios in the NFL on a college level, but there are ways that number gets scewed. Regardless though, there is only one legitamite counter argument to that I can give......


Actually never mind , I found something interesting. Did you know that despite our offensive decrease(which hasmore to with our number of plays ran this year i think because our D couldnt get off the field, given the McElroy had a highcompletetion percentage when we did pass), that we scored the exact same number of points (242) as in our championship season(the regular season) against the 8 SEC schools + penn and VT.

That tells me that when we had the ball, we were effective with it, So, I really cant argue for significant change than what we had this past season. Though I will say this, we shouldnt come close to the ratios we put up in the 09 season again. Yes, TR is a great back, but there were many factors that contributed to a high octane running attack that dont repeat themselves often, and this season was proof of that.

Let's not get too ahead of ourselves automatically designating AJ as the starting QB this year. Yes he's been groomed and saw play time last season but as we all know it will be a battle for QB starting position this year. Frankly im excited with the competition and can't wait to see who wins it out. I like all of our QBs in the stable this season. It'll be fun. I just hope whoever wins the job will become a leader over time with what some of greg has shown them.

Nor do I think the guys you are thinking of are two of the most punishing RBs I've ever seen...

uhh, richardson and lacy... and it is not often that you have 2 running backs who each that kind of size and speed on one team.. both of these guys will go over 225.. i honestly don't know how much lacy weighs, but he is huge.. maybe in the 230-240 range..

so yes this would possibly be the 2 most punishing RB's i have seen on a team..

Eddie Lacy is very elusive and and way faster than a guy his size should be. He only needs to work on holding onto the ball and he might be someone who jumps the season after next.

I'm on the other end of the spectrum from ya here. AJ will start, and I don't see any other option around that other than an injury forces AJ to sit.

Seriously, he bumped Star Jackson from the back-up spot two years ago. Two years. He was firmly entrenched in the #2 spot last season.

the more i think about lacy, the more excited i get.. the suprise commitment when we already had a commitment from the top RB in the nation plus a deffinate starter already on the team.. i think it showed alot of confidence..

If the defense loads the box and singles up on our receivers I wnat is to be able to make them apy for this.

If they blitz, I want us to be able to pick it up and again make them pay.

If they line up in their base defense I want us to have an offense that will have an identity which will succeed against the base. I would prefer this to be power running, as I am old school, but a highly efficient passing game would serve as well.

He may, and is of this day, be Burton Burns best recruit.

I recall his recruitment and commitment very clearly. He was one of those guys that was "LSU's to lose." They did.

At first he was "questionable regarding qualifying." That part was true but Burns continued to recruit him. Then, when we knew he was more than likely in their tune went to "he's got an attitude problem."

Best statement I've heard—and respected—came from Sedrick Irvin (former coaching intern working with our RB's until he took the job with Mphs. Ironically, he's coaching with DuBose.) When Irvin accepted the job he was asked about working with Mark, Trent, and Eddie. When he went into detail about all the players one comment he said about Lacy struck me. It was his opinion that Lacy was a combination of the former two. That's pretty strong praise coming from a coach even though he was serving as an intern for our offense.

Likewise, I don't mind power running as long as is effective. Though, my problem is how much stress it puts on one area of the field, whereas a passing game stretches i(ideally to run it again). '08 and '09 lacked the multitude of injuries you tend to have. And it only takes one missed block to stop a run before it starts. So its just in my view that having a reliable passing game(or heck, just taking deep shots) is good for improving consistency in other areas of the field.

Though a key to that will be getting AJ(or Sims, based on sspring) into a rythm very early in the game.

I liked the idea of getting into a no huddle spread the field early with quick hitters to the wrs and try to wear down the D early. Being a former QB, I love to see the ball in the air but having an effective running game is a QBs best friend as well. IMHO I see this offense resembling the 09 offense with a few more throws sprinkled in to take advantage of the big arm that either QB possesses. I want to see a few more deep balls thrown to back off that 8th and sometimes 9th person in the box. We need to show the willingness to throw that ball and I do believe either QB doesn't mind tossing that ball.
