Solicitation of funds for a college athlete breaks all sorts of NCAA rules, and leaves the perpetrator open to any number of civil actions, but you won’t go to jail for it. Lying to the FBI, fraud and extortion are entirely different matters.

Now, the pieces make sense. If the allegations are accurate, Cecil Newton began pimping his son to the highest bidder not long after Cam left Florida. Not only are such actions in clear violation of NCAA rules, any school that was complicit or had knowledge of such actions will face dire consequences from the ruling body.

The only remaining piece of the puzzle and the biggest unanswered question is (with apologies for the Nixon-era clichƩ): What did Cam Newton know and when did he know it?

If Cam did not know he was being shopped, or discovered after the fact and divorced himself from his father’s actions, he has a chance of walking away. Unless the NCAA wants to punish the son for the sins of the father, this might get resolved quickly. But, if Cam was involved in any way, he’s toast. And he might take at least one SEC program down with him.

According to a separate ESPN report, Cam Newton phoned another recruiter and apologized for not going to Mississippi State, saying that his father had committed him to Auburn because, ā€œthe money was too much.ā€ If any part of that beyond the ā€œcall to apologizeā€ is true, Newton and Auburn could see this season, and many seasons to come, go up in flames.

No longer is whether or not Newton will play on Saturday against Georgia a big thing. The question now becomes: What SEC schools will be tainted by this scandal, and how great will the consequences be?

Maybe, maybe not . . . that remains to be seen. Wouldn't surprise me a bit should AU win the SEC Championship that y'all will only be able to claim it for 3 or 4 years before vacating it. So go ahead and raise the roof on the barn while you can . . .

There's no maybe that if we win either of our next 2 games we'll play in the SEC title game.

And if we win it on the field its ours.

If I may. Given that Auburn has not been credibly accused of anything yet I have a hard time believing the administration did anything wrong. Unfortunately the Albert Means situation taught us that a University can still get in trouble due to the conduct of their "boosters."

In that regard I would tend to agree with BigAL that the worst thing that could happen to Auburn would be some jackass acting on his own to pay for Cam.

Cam's dad concerns me. A father being that involved in his 22 year old sons life is weird. I fear he might be dirty here. I still don't have a feel as to how much Cam knows. I am also having a hard time remembering an incident like this where so much information was wrong. Almost all of the breaking reports have had major aspects of them refuted.

Right now this looks worse for MSU than Auburn but that could change quickly.

As for the Iron Bowl if we win it on the field I'm happy. I don't care what happens after that. The NCAA had plenty of time to act on this and they didn't.

Jimmy Raines.......Bobby Lowder....ring any bells for ya?
It's been well known that the boosters over there are ape crazy. and untill you clean it up it's only going to get worse.
The pay for play scam has been going on @ AU for years thier one of the worst in the country.
But that's not becuase of the university it's self. it's the good ol boy mentality, backed by truck loads of cash.
Not saying it doesn't happen anywhere else....just that it seems to happen more @ the barn than anywhere in the SEC.
Even Bowden outed y'all later on. And while the NCAA may have had plenty of time AU new about this in July as well, yet they made the
choice to play the kid anyway. So if the hammer falls on AU....so be it. they get what they deserve. Becuse they KNEW better. but did it anyway.

To date, AUBURN has been accused of no wrong-doing. That is not denial, that is not spin, that is truth. Yes, people think because he was potentially shopped to State he must've been shopped to Auburn. The problem with that is he wasn't shopped to OU or UT, either.

Did Cecil do something shady at MSU? Ah, at times yes it looks like he did. Rogers says he had nothing to do with Auburn.

At this point, there is nothing saying Auburn has done anything wrong. No one has implicated Auburn.

IF Auburn has done something wrong it will take awhile to implicate them I think. Cam's eligibility is what is at stake right now.

So a Mississippi State recruiter saying he was told by Cam that he wanted to come to MSU, but the money from Auburn was just too much to turn down, that’s NOT an accusation against Auburn? Sounds like a pretty strong accusation to me. <?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" /><o:p></o:p>
<o:p> </o:p>
So what exactly do you think Mississippi State reported to the SEC? That THEY broke the rules? They turned in Auburn. They have made the accusation that Cam would have went to MSU had he not been offered a butt load of cash from Auburn. If you don’t believe that is the accusation being made by MSU, you are seriously kidding yourself. <o:p></o:p>

Funny how we heard it and heard it about albert means from auburn fans. Bama is dirty, close their football team blah blah blah! Now that shoe is on the other foot the NCAA is out dated and we should pay players. Give me a break.

It's a little sad really. I got hammered for mentioning a new ESPN story on an auburn board. Because it was ESPN everyone there assumed it was BS and I was a fool for even considering any truth it contained.

I still doubt Auburn was involved in paying for Cam. I question how complicit Cam was or if he even knew at all. Even if he was I honestly don't care if he took money. The NCAA regulations are outdated, unfair to the players, and naive. I only wish he, and every other athlete that takes money from the system, hadn't gotten caught. Not that the NCAA will ever right that wrong or even acknowledge it as credible.

At this point wagons have been circled and everyone smells a rat. Welcome to SEC football. And because its the SEC there is little empathy and lots of belligerence from other fans. That exascerbates the problem.

It also doesn't help that allegations reported as fact by the media contain glaring errors. It also looks bad for the SEC if they in fact "cleared" him in July. The timing also makes MSU look bad.

If we win Saturday at least we'll play for the conference championship.

I wonder what would have happened had Tubberville and company offered Newton instead of Burns.

Charles Barkley made basically the same statement yesterday and I immediately thought, ā€œSo what do you say to those who were just punished if you let Auburn slide?ā€ Should the NCAA really say to USC, ā€œSorry about the probation, but we’re going to let Auburn slide on this one because everybody’s doing it and we should have changed the rules years ago.ā€ Until the rules are changed, every situation has to be handled in the same manner. <?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" /><o:p></o:p>

I've said it and I'll say it again. If this were an Alabama player and his father in question and we were sitting undefeated with 2 games left to play in regular season. Auburn and their fanbase would be FOAMING at the mouth for the NCAA to destroy us in any way possible. But now that AU's possibly looking down the barrel the NCAA and it's rules are antiquated and should be thrown out the window. As it stands, us Bammers are being mean and piling it on to a helpless young athlete and his father. Bammers are mean people that don't understand the complexity of the family over on the plains...;)

I know there has been some questions about who these "recruiters" for Miss state are since only coaches are allowed to recruit.

Well i met a lady last night that in conversation called her self a recruiter for for the university she went to. of course that got my interest so i asked a few more questions. She said she was one of the girls that they put with recruits when they come to campus to help "recruit". things she said.....

"We had to be careful about what they did and where they took the recruits so they wouldnt get in trouble".

"Having seen it all from the inside and having some backgorund knowledge it goes on everywhere".

So i know some have asked the question why would Cam call a recruiter to apologise to....my speculation is that he would feel so comfortable talking wtith one of these girls...like a friend/girl friend. he probably had a lot more contact with her thru phone, text, email, and other (e.g. dates) than he ever would have a coach (because they are limited by ncaa). He had built a personal relationship with her and felt like he was cheating on her (so to speak) and wanted to tell her he was sorry for having to change his mind.

For the record....she didn't go to Miss State...

Saban would have sat Newton, to be safe

Just amazing to me that al.com and B'ham news continue to sit silent on this. Needles could be heard dropping in their offices throughout this whole affair.

I'll never forget the headlines on Thanksgiving Day back in 2000. My family had all come to my house here in GA for the day. My dad sadly showed me the B'ham News that day that he brought with him. It was all about the NCAA coming to town and basically setting up camp regarding the Means situation. It was almost a celebration it was so large in life to the B'ham News.

Now fast forward to how they've handled Cam. Just pitiful. I don't subscribe. I don't buy a B'ham News ever. If I did.....I never would again! So much bias to Cam and Auburn in these situation while the national media presents nuggets upon nuggets of information. It is just mind blowing to me. Thank goodness they don't (and won't) get a penny of my money.

I'll never forget the first time I read that headline scroll across ESPNs bottom line while watching football on Thanksgiving. My heart went through my throat. AU fans are publically in denial, but deep down they know there is a good possibility of major trouble just on the horizon.

Front page new on the Columbus Ledger......Auburn fans are fuming. Had to block most of them off my feed on FB it is getting crazy in this area...I am enjoying watching them squirm. I will admit it.

I recall the Means affair as well, as I lived in Atlanta at the time. Not big Bama fans over there, and the whole sports radio crew over there was having a grand old time. Couple that with Bama's worst season since Dubose's first season (:lance:), and it was a tough time to be a Bama fan, and embarrassing to be an alum.

I voted "no" because I do not think Auburn University was involved in any pay for play scandal. I really do believe that the school and it's officials are innocent. However, those rogue boosters will get you every time. I'm going to say that Newton should be sitting right now, so Auburn could do damage control. But it really is a weird spot to be in, as he's already played in 10 games, and sitting him the last two means the risk of losing a game and throwing the baby out with the bathwater. So, I would sit him, but Auburn could do just as well as to play him. Final result in all of this, if I had to make a shot-in-the-dark call? Auburn U. is exonerated, but Newton is found ineligible and all games are forfeited.

Anyone hear the interview yesterday with Luginbill who said that he thought poll folks might start to worry about this whole thing with Auburn, and start voting differently down the stretch, enabling TCU to jump them. The gap isn't large right now in the BCS.

As an Alabama fan, this is truly a sad story right now, and a black mark on our state's reputation.
