🏈 What A True Dual-Threat QB Brings To The Kiffin Offense

I screamed all night at Bateman to keep it during the Ole Pi$$ game. People beside me in the stands were asking "what in the hell are you talking about?" Bateman came from a spread offense in HS but it was a 4-5 wide sling it all over the field variety. Barnett was the same. Coker, backed up AJ in a similar spread and then St. Pauls changed their offense to a Wing T. Running the spread option, and "truly reading" the defender and pulling or giving the ball to the back takes tons of practice time. Those that aren't instinctive runners, are going to be hesitant. Those that aren't, will rip that shit up!!

I've been ready for a true DTQB every since David Palmer gave everything he had in the Georgia dome. I remember thinking if palmer was had this or that he would a great this or that. When I look at some of the skill guys in the 16 class its funny how many look like they got this or that. I think they are going to do great things.

But when I look at Hurt's film I never saw him under center and he didn't have to keep his back to the d on play action. I believe that's what CNS was talking about patience. I would think hurts is learning the pro-style side of the offense. If he is picking that up I could see him getting packages, splitting time, starting now or later.

Good read T&B

Look, Kiffin already has RPO's built into the offense. We saw it last year, as indicated in the article.

If Hurts is already too good to keep off the field and already is getting a "package", just give him the offense for crying out loud.

All he really has to do is learn 7-10 plays out of different formations. With that package, you'd really only have 2 main reads: how the Mike is aligned, and how the safeties/corners are aligned (1 high 2 high, etc). If it's 1 high, then you look where the SS is at, in the box. So if it's a run play, you might make a check to change directions. Whether it's 2 tight 2 wide ace back, 3 wide 1 tight ace, 3 wide 2 back, 2 wide 1 tight 2 back, 4 wide ace back, 3 wide, off H single back, etc. You run those 7-10 plays out of all those different looks, That's 70+ plays right there. I'm sure he already has those down. And implement the pro stuff every week so he grows with it. I think this is the way Saban in leaning, as indicated by his "coaching staff's patience" comments at his last presser.

Look at Clemson. Look at Ole miss. Both of those teams took our defense, the best defense in college football last year, to the woodshed with 8-10 plays in various formations. Go back and watch the tapes.

It shouldn't take rocket surgery for an offense to be effective. Especially when you have a kid like Hurts.

So Hurts brings the ability to run the Kiffin spread. I guess why so many believe this kid can have a dynamic role without necessarily starting. On a side note, this is a lot of the argument southern cal is struggling with their two QBs. With Browne getting the starting nod that will look a lot like the traditional pro set of yesteryear fame. But Sam Darnold gives them the spread concepts they want to get on the field. I expect to see both. These two programs are mirroring each other in a lot of ways.

Like this ? Cooper could have run like Forrest Gump all the way to the locker room; instead he hands the ball off.

Yep! There were 5-6 times that he did this!! Now, guys that didn't traditionally run this stuff, they struggle with the read. IF you look at Bateman's head, he gives a slight look back to see if Henry is coming instead of putting his head and eyes directly on #4, the man he is supposed to read. In the beginning, at the junior high level, coach doesn't trust his QBs eyes, so he calls the play and then tags it with "GIVE, KEEP, or PITCH". If the QB doesn't see it until HS, it is much the same way. I just don't think Bateman ever truly ran this stuff in HS. If he did, it was of the pre-determined variety.

Palmer was about 20 years ahead of his time.
