šŸˆ Welcome to the SEC...from SEC shorts. "Woah, that's a lot of baggage."

They talked about a super conference on morning radio up here in Nashville about adding Clemson and possibly Florida State from the ACC also
They need to concentrate on covering Vandy.

Here's where their conversation fails the logic test. The Big12 issues stem from renewing TV rights. The ACC, along with the SEC, have their deals in place (which have been finalized recently.) So, since Clemson and FSU have new TV deals, why leave?

The question to be asked is which teams join the ACC.

I think we need to admit it's happening.
Yes, unfortunately you’re right but I still say it will be bad for college football and bad for the SEC. The current SEC teams already have access to recruiting in the state of Texas but now UT and OU will have access to the extremely fertile recruiting grounds of Florida, Georgia, Louisiana and Alabama. Plus, adding those two schools will only further reduce the number of times teams from different divisions can play one another.

Maybe bad for the mid to lower tier of the SEC? Maybe post Saban but until then I think Bama is going to get their top choices for recruits.

Now I completely agree this is a huge win for the shorthorns and OU. Honestly I see the Big 12 and Pac 12 dissolving if they did not so something. This will probably nail the coffin shut for the Big 12 and send the crumbs to the Pac 12. Does it really strengthen the Pac 12? I doubt it.

Saw a tweet that quoted an unnamed someone associated with the Big 12 that described it something like this... "If the Big 12 was a mall, they just lost their 2 anchor stores, and now the rest of the small stores remaining are scrambling..." That is a perfect analogy.

So it's about money, so what happens when the shares are diluted by the addition of two more teams? The TV rights get increased? I understand revenue will go up simply by the schools, but all of the external money that gets paid out, how does that work?

They came for a reason and it wasn't because they held the face cards.

Well, I was hoping they bombed on the flop and folded. Anyway, I still contend this is not good for college football or for the SEC. I realize it’s become more of a business than of a sport but if they make it all about business they will end up destroying much of what I love about college football. So, when the Power Five … strike that … Power Four become nothing but a minor league system for the NFL with paid players and 16 team playoffs, then the game I have loved as a player and a fan for 55 years will not hold the same allure for me. And that saddens this old school old man.

I tend to agree with Davestwin. I am not convinced that this is a good thing. If the conference fills up with all of the big name powers in college football, guess what... some are not going to be powers any longer and the game just won't be the same. College football, in my opinion, has always been special and better that any other sport at any level. It is becoming too NFL-ish now and I think we're seeing the end of what college football has been.
Transfer portal = free agency
12 team playoffs (bye bye to the bowl games. hello to players sitting out non-playoff bowl games that do remain at a much higher level.)
Mega conferences ( see NFC / AFC and also forget about regional pride.)
Paid players ( watch out for the players' unions )

Sorry folks, I just don't like where it is going.
Whatever happens to college football, I hope Bama stays on top of it. ROLL TIDE ROLL!!1

I bet they said the same thing about the forward pass…

Times change. It is what it is and it’ll be just fine. To be honest, it’s already a minor league for the NFL and really there are only a handful of school able to ā€œplay the gameā€ regardless of how you slice the pie.

I’ve never been one to support players getting paid or super leagues, but the tides of the ocean keep grinding… and it’s impossible to hold it back forever.

Setting aside the NIL for the question.

How would you recommend getting to where Sankey mentioned the other day? A time where we don't have people from Yale football telling SEC schools what they can and can't do...

There are 12 on the rules committee today and only a third represent Power 5 conferences: PAC, B1G, and Big12. But we do have the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference represented (who, by the way, doesn't even receive an automatic bid to March Madness: they're a D2 team.)

You say it will be fine, but declining numbers in areas of the game show it's not. Lord knows a company like ESPN and Disney can create any numbers they want with outlandish contracts on sports and monopolizing it all, but the fact still stands more and more are getting fed up. Old money feeds college football. The younger generation is not funneling money into programs and keeping them stable, it's the old alumni and job creators from years past. You'll always have some young hotshot wanting access and paying for it or somebody in the college town wanting to keep up with the Jones' and make a name for themselves in college town circles, but the days of 100,000 smaller boosters keeping the program oiled and greased will slowly dwindle in my mind. I'm telling you, they have all but killed the golden goose and it will be propped up for a bit so people can save face, but it'll all decrease eventually. NIL will do the same. It's the new hip thing at the moment, but it'll eventually decrease, albeit still lucrative for some) once it's no longer the shiny new car on the lot.
