šŸ’° SPRTSBK Week 1 SEC spreads via @CaesarsSports: Alabama (-31) vs. Utah State

Spring football is over and the fall is still too far away for many of us, but the folks at Caesars has given us a little something to whet our college football appetite.

The sportsbook released some Week 1 betting lines for some intriguing opening-season games, including games involving SEC matchups.

The defending College Football Playoff national champion Georgia Bulldogs open the season on Sept. 3 against Oregon. Kirby Smart’s Bulldogs are a 15-point favorite.

Meanwhile, Alabama, coming off a loss to Georgia in the CFP title game, has been installed as a 31-point favorite over visiting Utah State. The Tide returns Heisman Trophy winner Bryce Young and defensive standout Will Anderson.

Last season, the Tide’s 92-game streak in which Alabama was the betting favorite was snapped heading into the SEC Championship Game in which Georgia was a 6.5-point favorite.

Check out the betting lines released featuring SEC teams:
  • Utah State (+31) at Alabama, Sept. 2

I don't think I need to explain my comment "worst season opener under CNS". Is this even debatable?
Why not? An FCS team has been the season opener: WCU.

Based on what Utah State is fielding they are a better than than a few Bama has opened with: 'ville, as mentioned, as well as WCU. San Jose State says, "hold my beer." Meanwhile, Duke and San Jose State enter the chat.

Duke in that neutral site game as an opener in 2019 was a poor scheduling decision. In my opinion. They were bad. Had a bad season. 5-7 if I remember correctly. We beat them by 39 after a slow start. They had been 8-5 the year before, so at least they’d been somewhat good. Wasn’t Utah State 11-3 last year? Beat a solid San Diego State team. Been a few non-power house schools to open, but more the exception than the rule.

I’ll add this, it really hasn’t mattered who we open with, it’s on average a huge beat down. Whether Michigan, Wisconsin, USC, Louisville, FSU, Miami… we’ve played closer games against much weaker schools than we’ve played against these big boys.

Wait what? TerryP you spent the preseason and part of the season trying to convince us how much of a quality game that Duke game was under Cutcliffe was.

I said that I liked the matchup of Cutcliffe's play calling against the defense as a gauge to where the defense was at that point. If you'll recall, he was as unorthodox as he's ever been with his calls: calling "run stunts" practically every play.

It—Cut's play calling style—worked on one series of the first three or four...and then again right before the half. Bama allowed a little over 100 yards rushing that game. It was indicative of how they defended the run all season—or how well they didn't defend the run.

You remember the two losses of '19? Both Auburn and LSU's main backs had over 100. People were pointing to Burrow's 390+ in the air where it was Edwards-Helaire's five yards per carry that broke their back (like Whitlow's yards per carry in the loss to Auburn.)

My contention here is Utah State isn't the worst opener: I'd take this Aggie team over that Duke team.

Hyperbole.

Yes, Bama may beat them as badly as they did USC or Michigan in their season openers. But this Aggie team could beat the Louisville team Bama opened with in '18, among others.
And there's Duke. With the home and away series over the next few years, many of them are second or third games, so we won't have another marquee opener until we play FSU again in '25 (debatable if that will qualify). When we do that, we'll have FSU 8/31 away and then Wisconsin at home 9/13.

RTR,

Tim
