💬 Wanted to see what you guys think about this...ref forces wrestler to cut his hair or forfeit

I know I and a few others have very, very, very different social/political beliefs than the majority on here, but that's why I wanted to see what you guys felt about this situation that happened in New Jersey last week...



Referee forces wrestler to cut dreadlocks or else forfeit high school match

So, the story here is that it is legal in New Jersey High School wrestling for wrestlers with long hair to wear a cap (though its not even consistently ruled on)... and this wrestler was originally wearing a cap over his dreadlocks but the official told him that wasn't good enough and he had to either cut his hair right then and there or forfeit his match (which was the deciding match I believe).

Now, the story gets even more heated considering that the official in question got into trouble earlier this year for referring to a fellow referee as the n-word.

Also, referee's are supposed to check things like hair, fingernails, gear, etc. during weigh ins before the matches begin. The referee suddenly had an issue with him wearing a cap over his hair right before the match.

I know this is super off topic and mods can move it if they want to but I just wanted to see what others thought. No one could possibly think this is alright, right? I need to see hope in humanity lol

Agreed on all points. As someone who's lived in CO my whole life, I see/feel more racist energy up here than when in Alabama. Just personal opinion though... I'm sure some feel different.

This was complete nonsense. Wrestlers have hair, fingernails, and body checked at weigh-ins. Fingernails must be clipped and unsafe wounds can get you DQ'd. If your hair in front is too long it must be cut above line of sight. If hair on top or in back is too long, it is permissible to use a hair net or properly equipped headgear. The point being, it's checked well BEFORE a wrestler goes to the mat! This guy was overstepping his bounds and based on previous incidents, it's not difficult to surmise why. I would have two questions. First, why was he still officiating after the first incident? Using racial slurs during your officiating capacity should result in immediate termination. Second, did the kids coach lose it during this ordeal or not? If not, why not? This should have been appealed to the head of officials prior to the kid cutting his hair. This is another example of someone given a modicum of authority that abused it and was well deserving of an absolute ass whooping. Oh yeah and should also be fired.

Racism is a broad term. It could be elements of racism, could be he's an azzhole of the highest order in life. In any case, this one should cost him, big time. There are a lot of things one can do with his life and there are some things we should never do again. This guy definitely falls into the later.

The only question, was the ref following the rules/guidelines set forth?

It's not clear to me yet how this has anything to do with racism.

Kudo's to the kid for making the decision not to forfeit and just cut the hair and handle it the way he did.

I read a tweet about this topic that said dreads are part of some peoples religion. Interesting, I've never heard of that before.

Read the rest of the OP. This guy got in some trouble for calling a fellow ref the N-word. Also the fact that they haves rules allowing head covers to be used but gave the kid an ultimatum, you can't wear the head cover and you have to cut your hair or else.
