Leonard Fournette was front and center late last year when the controversy about players sitting out of bowl games brewed.

When the former LSU RB announced he would not play in the Citrus Bowl against Louisville, he portrayed the decision as a mutual one between himself and LSU coach Ed Orgeron. Fournette said at the time that he was still dealing with the left ankle injury that had hampered him all season and kept him out of four games, but he still was criticized by some for not playing.

On Friday, though, Fournette said he didn't really have a say in the bowl-game decision.

"To be honest, it really wasn't my decision," Fournette told NFL Now Live. "My coach brought me into the office. He told me 'You have a lot on the line.' He didn't want me to play. I cried like a baby. It was hard for me. That was my first time not really traveling with the team and I couldn't play in a game with my brothers. I'm going to miss them."

Later in the interview, Fournette reiterated the point, saying "my coach made (the decision) for me."

It's a little odd that Fournette took some ownership of the decision in December but isn't now, since he would've been spared some of the initial backlash if he had said right off the bat that it wasn't his decision.

In fact, it's odd that Fournette would change his tune at all, since sitting out of the bowl doesn't seem to have affected his draft stock.

Fournette's health appears to be in good condition now, as he said Friday that he will run at the NFL Scouting Combine next month. He wouldn't predict how fast his 40-yard dash would be, but he'll have high expectations going into the event given his rare athleticism.

He'll no doubt be asked again about the bowl decision at the combine, and it will be interesting to see which story he sticks to.

If I'm a LSU fan, I'm reading this and wondering "what the hell does O think he's doing?"

There was a lot of stuff blowing in the wind at that time. Foremost, that he was messing with an agent. But his season was an exercise in apathy up to then. Once concluded, he missed his senior banquet and didn't travel with the team. I could see where O could have had enough and said what he said. But this season, Fournette seemed to be in a constant state of MIA and I thought a real disappointment.

I honestly think he knew Guice wanted it more than Fournette and knew he could produce, and boy did that show. I always felt Fournette was on cruise control the last year and a half after his Heisman campaign was derailed by us as a Sophomore. His desire just wasn't there from the guy I saw new to campus and looking to prove himself. I have no doubts he was in contact with agents, as most are if we all want to be fair with each other here, and that he was told he was already a top guy so do what it takes to get there healthy.

I think injuries had every bit and more to do with his down performance.

He should have been forced to sit much earlier in the season to rehab what was a chronic ankle injury. Guice easily could have carried the load. Coaches should have made that "tough call" earlier on if "doing the right thing" were the motivation.

It's odd that "concerns" arose for a bowl game that would have been his last chance to play for a team he's always loved.

I'm not fully convinced there wasn't more concern that street agents weren't putting a bigger bug in his ear to sit and heal for the combine and/or hadn't been a bit more brazen with perks to attract him after the season ended.

Makes much more sense that if LF7 found himself taking more than he should and was a liability for the new HC O, Coach O made the decision for him to sit. Otherwise, I can't see them not letting him at least dress and travel with team. Even if to just get a walkout snap to send off their programs GOAT RB.

Seems closer to Andre Smith's situation... only with an excuse to hide potential wrongdoing.

Amazig how all...almost all...wanna tell all..almost all...anyway..
LF7 should have come back one more year..so he could finally say hehad 100 yards vs Bama...
Of course...it would have taken all 3 games vs Bama to addup to get the 100 yards...but...
What the hell...a 100 yards vs Bama is a 100 yards...right?

SPIN...... SPIN....... SPIN.....He is now trying to improve his draft spot by trying to look like a competitor instead of a premodona. He wanted that cash and was either already talking to an agent or just didn't want to get more hurt or hurt his draft status by trying to put up an unimpressive performance.
