The No. 2 seed women's tennis team swept Jackson State, 4-0, in the first round of the NCAA Women's Tennis Championship on Friday at the Roberta Alison Baumgardner Tennis Facility. The Crimson Tide (23-4) advances to face Princeton in the second round on Saturday at 1 p.m. CT.
"We treated this match as if we were playing for a conference championship," said Alabama head coach Jenny Mainz. "We have really done better throughout the course of the year in playing more mature and coming out executing our plays. I believe we did that from top to bottom tonight, and I commend the team for doing that."
Alabama cruised through doubles dropping three games combined on all courts. The Tide's top duo of fourth-ranked Maya Jansen and Erin Routliffe swept Jackson State's (10-18) Angela Condorelli and Akshatha Anath, 8-0, for the first win of the match. That was then followed by an 8-1 victory by No. 71 Luicelena Perez and Emily Zabor on court three to clinch the doubles point.
Singles was much of the same as Alabama lost a combined four games across all six courts. Routliffe and Jansen held their respective singles opponents scoreless as they both tallied 6-0, 6-0 victories on courts three and four. Zabor would provide the clinching win for the Tide, which sent the home team into Saturday's second round.
"We play every match like it's an SEC match," said Zabor. "The mind can do so many things. We need to make sure we come out and stick to our game plan. It's important we finish matches as soon as possible, so we can continue this journey throughout the postseason. When you have opportunities to finish, you need to get it done."
Tickets for the second round are available on RollTide.com and at the gate beginning one hour prior to the start of match play. The cost per session is $5 all ages and $3 for Alabama students.
