That was a tall backfield. I thought both Coker and Henry had a very unusual skill set that apparently gave our coaching staff fits. I still can't figure out what Coker did wrong after the Middle Tenn St. game. He was on pace for over 400 yards passing and had to sit out the second half. Starting Bateman the next week had to be more of a Kiffin epiphany than what was happening on the field in real time. I appreciate Coker so much for the class he showed, patience and endurance as he waited for what was his all along. Coach Saban immediately looking up Coker on the sidelines to shake his hand after the Georgia game said it best for me.

No sir. My wife and I talked about that handshake for the rest of the season. At the end of the Tennessee game with coach Saban praising Coker in his presence, I wondered if it has gotten any better. It frankly was hard to tell.

I think Jake Coker matured exponentially as the season went on and I enjoyed watching him play... but I do find it interesting to hear the exclamations of contrast between Bateman's performance at Ole Miss and Jake Coker's. Back up and watch the tape. It wasn't all glory and roses for Jake in the game going forward. Bateman taking that nasty hit and being mentally a bit in over his head was, i think, more of the reason for the pull than some kind of talent/ability disparity.

Bateman will be fun to watch... And if he happens to flounder, we've got 2-3 other guys that can probably do fine as well if the last few years are any indicator.
