šŸˆ Vanderbilt QB Diego Pavia’s claim that Vandy will ā€œrunā€ the state of Tennessee after this season.

Talking in another thread that I’d rather our players not say things to give opponents fuel.

Vandy of all programs…

Vandy lacks depth. Depth plays a big part in those November games - when the Vols play Vandy (@ Neyland this year).

I like the confidence, but again, if the confidence is real, what benefit does it bring to say something like this?

What's the difference between players talking trash to interviewers and players doing it through text messages, IG,etc in private settings?

IF I'm a QB, and i know someone on Auburn team from my HS days, I'm gonna shoot him a text telling him I'll light his ass up on Saturday. He goes back and tell his team what I said. What's the difference?

There's no advantage to it. Doesn't really affect the game on a level. Only thing difference between vandy and Alabama is that Vandy is used to losing and often can't cash the checks.

Dores will be ravaged by November vs 10 RC. If the game was played in 1st half of season, they may could scare them. He has written a check with his mouth that their a$$ can’t cash…

We can go around in circles for days with this.

I always will go back to, what ā€˜benefit’ or advantage does it give you to tell someone that you’re going to light his ass up?

It’s just emotions, and talk.

I’ve never been a bulletin board guy, as a player, then as a coach. I have always been of the group ā€œlet your actions do the talking for you on the field!ā€
I recall practicing for Vandy, of all teams, and they had a QB by the name of John Gromos. I’m running scout team QB and we run a dive play and I’m supposed to keep it. I do and Keith McCants clotheslines me and just hold me off the ground, my feet dangling like a little kid. The whistle blows and Keith tells me ā€œI’m gonna kill that MF’r Saturday!ā€ He says this while straightening up my jersey. My response. ā€œPlease wait until Saturday!ā€
Saturday comes and I’m up in the stands with my Dad and I point out Keith #86, tell Dad about what had happened and what was said. First series and Keith knocked Gromos the ā€œfuckā€ out! At the team meeting the next day, I walk in and Keith is sitting there with a big ass smile on his face and says ā€œI told you that I was gonna get that MF’r!ā€

Paraphrasing:

"Do you call these revenge games?"
"No. We don't call them revenge games. We're going to kill an ant with a sledge hammer."

Then we had a few people on social media sites take that one line, rarely without the proceeding question, and there we are ...

Never mind the other five minutes of discussing the offense and their mindset...

So the benefit of saying it is…?
No more, or less, that the anxiety over it being said. A big year and we'll see it again boosting his brand.

I know I use context a lot. But good lord, given the context here it's really nothing more than some locker room chatter that happens to be on a different media platform.

There's some REALLY good stuff in that interview with Gruden. It's here, somewhere.

So in another word... Anytime there's a player doing interview, the fans focus on the wrong thing.

If you are feed all your life chances are you'll continue to look for the same bytes.

Before we really entered this new realm of social media and folks just read the comments they were only fed those comments. Rarely did they take the entire interview in context. (So much of Saban's stuff was taken that way.) Now, it's the same thing but on audio and video: immediately.

HOWEVER, this generation is the biggest generation to date with smack talk. It's easy to see why. I've been saying this for over two decades...no, make that three in online communities like this one.

So am I reading this right? No benefit? I kid, I kid.

I understand it’s Vandy (the same team that beat us last year), and nothing (hopefully) will come of this, but are we really going to pretend that we as Alabama fans wouldn’t jump all over this and use it as fuel? I feel like we as a fanbase look for stuff like this more than most…specifically when you’re on the mountaintop and it’s not always the easiest to stay motivated when everyone else is chasing you.

I’ll also say, I’m excited for DeBoer, don’t take this as me not supporting him or the program. He is as good of a choice to replace the goat as we could have asked for. But at the same token, one of the areas he has struggled in - so far - seems to be discipline. There’s a huge contrast between him and Saban in this area, so maybe it’s just a huge swing from what we’ve been used to as of recent. But for an area that certainly doesn’t seem like it’s a strength of his - to just say ā€˜meh, it’s Vandy, this what bottom feeders do’…

Wether this generation likes to talk trash more than previous or not, comments like that will be used as motivation - by anyone and everyone who has an sort of competitive drive to them.

I felt recruiting changed a lot of this because these guys became friends before they became rivals. Therefor you didn't see as much hatred as you used to. Ohio State/Michigan, Ole Miss/Mississippi State, and Oregon/Oregon State are really the rivals I see that truly despise one another anymore. Clemson/South Carolina can be added to that, but so many others are mild now compared to their history.

Social media has created this society of "if you ain't putting someone down you're a clown" type mentality where everyone rails on each other. Like Frank Costello said in The Departed "it doesn't add inches to your dick" to insult someone or "get over on them". I guess it gets old people just running their mouths all...of...the...time these days. Like a casino, open 24/7.

It’s always the snippet that is going to garner clicks, never the entire conversation.
Back when I was coaching, we had just lost in the quarterfinals in baseball and 3 days later, we were playing our Spring football game. 8 of our baseball guys were also starters for the football team. I get asked the next morning how the Spring game went and I say ā€œwe didn’t look good! Lots of mistakes! We aren’t worried though, because multiple guys had literally just finished up with baseball. Now, if this had been a fall scrimmage, we would be worried!ā€ Someone overhears the conversation and calls our AD. The guy comes over to my school and berates me for saying ā€œso the team looked terrible!ā€ Once he stopped foaming at the mouth, I had to give him the ENTIRE conversation, not the snippet.
