🏈 Va Tech's RB replacement remains unsettled

"I'm really not a disciplined running back," Williams said. "I run my way. I've had coaches who have tried to teach me how to do this, do that. And I just can't do it. At first, it didn't sit well with Coach Hite at all. He's constantly [saying], 'Hammer the hole, hammer the hole. Hammer, hammer, hammer.' He wants to see contact non-stop. I didn't listen to him that much. I try not to make the contact. I try to make the people miss.
"I think after a while, after he saw me making plays and seeing that I'm pretty good at what I do, he kind of left me alone. . . . It's not like I can't run between the tackles or anything. I just choose not to."

"Look Coach Hite! I was the KANG back in high school! I got through AA running like this, and aint about to change for nobody, because I'm the kang! And it works! And....well, I don't really like contact,.........but.....

Lord have mercy! This is becoming too good to be true! I HOPE this kid starts against our defense.

Just going by what I remember reading about this kid a few weeks ago...

When he came out of high school as part of the 2008 signing class he wasn't very highly ranked as a true RB—though Rivals did have him in their top 50 for prospects at the position in the nation.

What stuck out to me is even with his mediocre rankings and evaluations, he was considered to be one of the best running backs in space for the 2008 class.

Comments like this are shocking, but also go to verify the decision our staff makes on who speaks in media sessions and who doesn't. To say the least, we seldom see a RS frosh in front of the camera unless they have proven themselves (two being Hightower and most recently Barret Jones.)

That said, we didn't see Coffee hit the hole as hard as we would have though he could until last year—it's not a talent found very often in young kids.

Sounds like is more of 3rd down back....

If does the "Darby" at the line after hand off he will have a long day...

Amazing at the mentality of the Bama backs...such a huge turn around since Saban took over in mental toughness.

He was until they had their starter hurt. Now, he's the primary backup. Earlier plans were using him occasionally but more on special teams.

Now, he's thrust in the spotlight.

Unless they think their starting RB can handle the same load they did last year it's going to be very interesting. Va. Tech had 645 rushing attempts over 13 games. Do that math...

They won't run 50 plays against Bama's defense. If this kid is the RB, and the QB can be contained, they are looking at minus total yardage in the game.

They've got a RS sophomore, Josh Oglesby?, that looks to be the guy that fills Evans role. (Evans had a hell of a year last year for his age) But, thinking he's going to take 20-25 carries is feasible, but brutal. So, if they continue on the same trend as they have the last few years that's going to leave the remaining carries on Williams.

He doesn't sound like a guy that is going to grind it out—more likely to try and bounce it outside. Tackling in the open field is now at a premium.

They've also got one kid that is technically a receiver, but has been getting carries now that they are dealing with an injury. Again, he doesn't sound like a bruiser kind of back.

IF the Hokies had a Charles Scott type of back on their roster I'd be looking at their running threat more seriously. At this point I'm starting to shy away from considering it as a threat for four quarters.

All that said I still think this one comes down to the QB—McElroy versus Taylor.

Tell ya this...the Va. Tech defense is an interesting study.

I gotta ask, is this a good for us interesting, or a bad for us interesting?

In McElwain we trust?

It's a tough defense for a QB to read, although I do see some areas we can take advantage of...

A lot of their LB/hybrid DB reads come from the WR's and the routes they run. If they are pulling up and going to blocking assignments they (VT) immediately rush the line for run defense. So, if our wide-outs can sell their routes, it bodes well for getting people out of the box.

If not? We'll see 8-9 in the box on running plays.

They tend to float CB's back in what would normally be a safety role in a cover-2. I like the match-up there with Julio down field.

It's so much on Greg to be accurate in this game. I do believe our guys can get open...it's the point of hitting them. I'd be willing to bet we see a lot of production out of our TE's...as long as we can sell the play action.

It's just an interesting defense—may rival Saban's on complexity.
