I know I'm in the minority here about loving this as much as I do Bama football...so be it. So I'm going to rant a bit...
Those of you who have paid attention in the last day or so have seen the USMNT roster for the World Cup and have seen the scuttle about Donovan not making the team. I agree that he has had a down year, he has pissed off the coach in the past with that sabbatical he took over a year ago, and that premiere athletes get cut a lot. That said...Landon Donovan has been THE face of US soccer for the last decade or so. Even those who don't keep up with soccer most likely have heard/read his name. There is no one...no one on that roster whom I'd rather see come in the game in about the 70th minute or so if we're down to Germany or Portugal 1 - 0 than Donovan.
There will be no real shame if the US doesn't advance out of the group of death play (this is a TOUGH group!), but there will be real disappointment. If the US finishes dead last, which I have a real hard time believing they will, Coach Klinsmann is going to have to do a lot of explaining and put on one helluva Johnny Cochran argument to justify leaving LD off and having that kind of pitiful result.
Now, the flip side...This roster is good! I'll be screaming my head off every game. I am so excited to see Wondo, Zusi, and Yedlin make it. I am stoked that Green made it (the kid's only 18 and has only one international cap (yeah, I think he took Donovan's spot))! Michael Bradley and Clint Dempsey are going to do some great things in Brazil! Those of you who have seen that WC commercial on NBC Sports with the drums banging loudly and the crowd chanting, "I BELIEVE THAT WE WILL WIN! I BELIEVE THAT WE WILL WIN!"...Yeah, that's my ringtone now.
We're just a couple of weeks away! Can't wait! USA! USA! USA!
