A few days before he appears before the Oklahoma Secondary School Activities Association’s board of directors, David Cornwell is confident.

ā€œVery confident,ā€ the Norman North quarterback said. ā€œWe’ve got a great case. It meets the criteria of the constitution. ā€œI’d be confused and hurt if they didn’t approve it.ā€ ...

In late summer 2011, Cornwell’s mother, Debbie, couldn’t sleep and dropped more than 20 pounds in less than a month. She’d battled a thyroid condition for nearly 20 years and thought her symptoms were unrelated.

While the Cornwells, in an interview where they were accompanied by an attorney and a public relations specialist, declined to go into specifics about Debbie’s illness, it took several months before doctors figured out how to manage the illness.

ā€œIt was such an unexpected, sudden illness,ā€ Debbie said. ā€œIt’s like a 70-percent mortality rate and I survived. It hits so fast that by the time they figure it out, you’re usually dead. I’m very thankful to be here and be healthy.ā€

The illness began in July and stretched to around October, keeping Cornwell from attending public school. Instead, he took homeschool courses and helped care for his mother, especially when his father was away on business.

Later in the semester, Cornwell took a mission trip to Mali.

According to David, if he's able to pass an English course over the summer, his plans are to be an early enrollee.

Norman North's David Cornwell didn't get his eligibility case settled on Tuesday in his appeal in front of the Oklahoma Secondary School Activities Association's Board of Directors.

But the highly recruited quarterback prospect remains confident he will be eligible to play next season.

After hearing new information in the case presented by Cornwell's family and its attorneys, the board voted to send the new information to the staff for re-evaluation.

OSSAA staff are likely to make a decision in the next week. If Cornwell is denied, he will appeal at a special board meeting at 1:30 p.m. June 12.

After Cornwell's family presented its case to the board, the group quickly voted to send the case back to the staff. Cornwell, his family and his attorneys met with an OSSAA staff member and outside legal counsel for about 90 minutes.

ā€œI think it went well,ā€ Cornwell said. ā€œI'm confident in our case still and that it meets their criteria. ā€œIt just may be a little bit longer.ā€

Cornwell is appealing for an additional semester of eligibility after missing the 2011 fall semester as his mother battled an illness.

Cornwell played for Jones last season, throwing for 2,742 yards and 27 touchdowns. He moved to the Norman North district in January after the family purchased a house in Norman.

Cornwell said he appreciated the outpouring of support over the last few days after he spoke publicly about his appeal.

ā€œThat shows those guys have my back,ā€ Cornwell said. ā€œIt's been really great to see the support when I've been at the school for such a short time.ā€

Cornwell spent the weekend visiting Alabama. The Crimson Tide are one of several high-profile schools to extend an offer to Cornwell. Other include Oklahoma State, Notre Dame, Virginia Tech and Tennessee.
