Eleven University of Alabama football players have had surgery since the end of the 2008 season, but only running back Roy Upchurch and receiver Earl Alexander will be affected for spring practice.

Upchurch (neck) and Alexander (right shoulder) will both have non-contact status for spring drills, which begin Monday, March 23.

The other nine players will be at full contact for the spring. Defensive back Kareem Jackson (left wrist), offensive lineman Barrett Jones (right shoulder), wide receiver Julio Jones (left shoulder and left wrist), linebacker Rolando McClain (right thumb), tight end Colin Peek (left foot), linebacker Cory Reamer (right knee, right wrist), wide receiver B.J. Scott (right knee), tight end Brad Smelley (right wrist) and defensive lineman Lorenzo Washington (right thumb) have all been cleared for practice.

This may be a dumb question but, does this mean we should expect him to continue to play? Or is that still to be determined? I know there was talk that he may not be able to play again after his neck problems.

I think it's still being reviewed. Upchurch is a heck of a player but has been bothered by some type of injury since highschool. The kid is all heart, but sometimes it isn't enough. I could tell in the Auburn game when he took himself out, that he was in serious pain.

I think the Upchurch story will get interesting when two-a-days start.

Argo, I agree that it may get very interesting come 2 a days. The neck is a serious portion of the body that you don't want to take any chances. I can't help but think that Roy gets a "medical" this Fall. I hope I'm wrong but I still have that feeling.

I thought that Love was a little banged up too. Was his aches & pains fixed w/o surgery or is he still questionable?

Evidently, and I'm assuming here, the medical staff felt like he didn't need surgery. I was a little surprised at that myself when I didn't hear he was having surgery last month when all the other guys did.
