Last season ODU played E Michigan in the same bowl game. ODU ended up as one of the few teams that actually made money on their bowl game despite only taking roughly a 1000 fans with them.
But because of the revenue-sharing system in Conference USA, Old Dominion pocketed nearly $93,000 from the Popeyes Bahamas Bowl. That was in spite of the fact that it is the only bowl game held outside of the United States and is traditionally one of the poorest-attended postseason FBS games.
ODU sold about 1,700 tickets, including hundreds purchased by fans who did not attend the game. Most donated their tickets to Bahamian youth football players.
ODU took about 1,000 fans to Nassau, where the Monarchs held off Eastern Michigan, 24-20, to win their first bowl game.
We sold 1,700 tickets and it was the more than Western Kentucky and Middle Tennessee sold in the previous two Bahamas Bowls," athletic director Wood Selig said.
"It wasn't a lot for a bowl, but you're asking a heck of a lot from your fans with that kind of travel and expense. That's the toughest bowl to get to."
ODU completed a recent audit of its bowl receipts, which show the team spent $579,401.
Conference USA reimbursed the school $583,107 and ODU generated $89,307 in ticket revenue.
