Nope, I can't speak for the players. He should have left it alone.
Where does Byrne go with this now... Poor decision...but hell, he had a few of those at Arizona
We'll see differently on this one. Personally, it's a waste of time in my eyes to get into a debate with some other fan about UCF. However, when I see players (like DH) coming out publicly "having Byrne's back" on this little spat? They are the ones who earned last years title and if they are appreciating Byrne's support, and we support the players...IF they're good with it, perhaps we should be as well.
BTW, I've seen a few blame Byrne for the buyout with Miller since he was AD when his contract extension was signed. I've not seen anyone, anywhere, linking Byrne with that buyout/contract in its original form outlining the buyout. Have you?
I would have said it was probably more annoying to Bama fans when this self-declaration began.
We'll never know the answer as to which degree one group was more annoyed than the other. Since this started I've wondered how much disrespect they've--the players--felt with this whole fiasco.
For decades I've entertained the thought of "how would the players react" if some of these people who scoff at the titles from the 20's and 30's were to do so in person, in the face, of one of those players on those teams. Yeah, I know it's not going to happen. Hell, I don't even know if any of the guys from the '30's are still alive.

And for clarity's sake, here's my stance on this whole argument.
I really don't care how fans of another school claim titles. If they want to laugh at some Bama claims, so be it. All I really care about in these conversations is the answer to this question:
How do you wish to count the titles? All time claimed? AP? BCS? Playoff? Make your choice and get back to me with who has more.
Hell, I saw a UCF fan yesterday insinuate nothing should be counted before the BCS system was in place. A few years ago I mentioned I suspected we'd see the AP titles devalued as time goes on and we're seeing it sooner than later.
