I will always appreciate what Mike brought to Tuscaloosa as a player. I also appreciate and certainly respect the situation he inherited when he took over the HC position.

But, calling him a leader and a strong person? No, sir. Players walked over him and his "rules" like they were a doormat. With the exception of his ability to keep his pants zipped in the athletic department offices I can't say he was any more of a leader than DuBose.

I will agree with you about this one. That's why with Coach Saban came in, the players found out real fast when they stood.

To compare him to Dubose....well thats a sin....
Dubose could control nothing....
Mike was a very good leader... remember this was his intro back to CF since the 80s...and dealing with kids instead of adults...

Wasn't there constant stories of players (like Brodie Croyle) sleeping in team meetings and fights between players over girls during the Shula years? I dont hate Shula has much as a lot of people, I think he was a band aid on a program that was gushing blood, and I still think that '05 team would have been National Title contenders had Prothro not gone down (it honestly looked like any creativity that Shula had with the offense went down with him). He was a lot like DuBose IMO as a "leader". His best year was a year where there were several "alpha dogs" on the team that would actually lead. For Shula it was DeMeco Ryans, Roman Harper, Tim Castille, etc. and for DuBose is was Shaun Alexander, Chris Samuels, etc.

How did he do a hell of a job? By letting players cheat in the classroom? By punishing some players while others skated? He had no control on the field, off the field, in the classroom...you name the location.

Yes, he was a band-aid in a tough, tough time for Bama. But, to describe his tenure as one where rules were set and followed? No, sir.

There's only one thing that Shula had over DuBose: he kept his zipper up. I'm not making this up, 50. I could cite names, what happened, etc. from now until the sun sets today and I'd still be typing.

WellMal thought the world of him...and had he been willing to adjust key positions on staff....fire some..bring in others....his tenure wouldn't have been shortened...according to Mal..so it couldnt be the panacea you all seem to see...
As you can tell...he is still of my all time favorites.. coach nplayer
Seems Nick hashad many of same issues....as all coaches have...with athletes...

One of my former roommates taught at math Bama for several years. He pleasantly surprised during Saban's first season at UA when people would come by the classrooms to take roll for Coach Saban. He said that was a drastic change.
