A&M is a train wreck! That was pitiful! You're up 34 points and then you want to start chunking the ball all over the yard instead of continuing to gash UCLA on the ground. I guess they were wanting to show that they were a balanced attack. KS get his clock management skills from Les Miles or something? Run the ball, stay in bounds, and the clock still runs!!
Chavis needs to retire! He has seen his better days!
Sumlin was in his element while in Houston. He could win big against inferior competition and only play 1 big game a year and possibly win it as well. If he didn't win, the people would still love him at that level because they were winning 9-10 games a year. In the BIG BOY LEAGUE, he has been exposed! Outside of the '12 season where he caught lightning in a bottle, he has been mediocre, an 8-5 machine.

Mid-major coaches who can recruit very well can distance themselves from their counterparts. The margin is so much narrower in upper tier conferences, and razor thin if you can make it into the top 10. Player development, preparation and game decisions (the X's and O's) matter as much as the Jacks and Joes. Guys like Strong (I think he'll do well again at South Florida) can bring in enough talent to make a difference, and there's less likelihood of being outcoached.
 
A&M is a hard program to get a handle on when it comes to what they should expect.

Sumlin is averaging nine wins a season.

Sherman's and Fran's best seasons had nine wins so that looks like a step up from the last two coaching staff's.

They were so desperate to get rid of Slocum. Now, granted, Slocum only average about eight wins a season. But, he also had four or five conference titles in his 14 years along with five or six double-digit win seasons.

Sherrill, while putting three conference trophies in their case, only averaged around seven wins a season.

So, again...

What should they expect?

While I don't think Sumlin is awful.....I have to ask, who would you hire? If you look over aTm's history, they can't seem to get out of their own way. They have the money to compete and we know Texas (the state of) is loaded with enough talent for 10 colleges. Having said all that, let's look at their history.

Bear at aTm and has them winning, but not national champions. Leaves to go to Bama (mamma called) we know how that ends. 25 years later and 6 national championships.
Gene Stallings gets fired from aTm for not winning enough, comes to Bama and averages 10 wins a year along with a National Championship.
Dennis Franchione, turns Bama around in his second year and would have won the west had we not been on probation. Goes to aTm and sucks like Richard Simmons giving out Christmas presents.

Although aTm has the money to compete and buy everything within the arms race of the SEC to be competitive, they just can't get out of their own way. I'm afraid aTm is about to pull an LSU and settle for second or maybe even third best hire. Who you gonna get?

There will be plenty of candidates and interest if the job opens up. Remember, a new hire won't happen until December. aTm has money and can entice a coach to leave their current job. At the same time, there will be a few who lead their team to a high level and will be the next up and comer.

It's not an Alabama vs aTm thing so your examples really aren't relevant. Nothing personal. Not trying to start a pissing contest.

Exactly. Offense will win some games & on a fluke beat a good defensive team (vs 'Bama in '12) but it just will not hold up consistently.

Sumlin has been living off the curtails of Manzeil's Heisman & the 2012 'Bama win. I thought, he might have turned the corner by hiring Chavis but good grief.

Not to mention, having to step down d/t getting in trouble with the NCAA.

I didn't read your post before I posted mine, but that is exactly what I was getting at with my diatribe.
By my comparison of Alabama and aTm, it is the program and not necessarily just the coaching. I think their ceiling is about 9-10 wins a year.
 
He will return somewhere...sometimes its just not the right place....
As for Mike Shula.... the time was awful for us.....we needed a man with character...a leader....a strong person....and Mike did all of that....
Class all the way.... his assistants were awful.... didnt like Radar or Kines...
But MS was a Bama legend... and did what he was brought in to do...

I will always appreciate what Mike brought to Tuscaloosa as a player. I also appreciate and certainly respect the situation he inherited when he took over the HC position.

But, calling him a leader and a strong person? No, sir. Players walked over him and his "rules" like they were a doormat. With the exception of his ability to keep his pants zipped in the athletic department offices I can't say he was any more of a leader than DuBose.

I will agree with you about this one. That's why with Coach Saban came in, the players found out real fast when they stood.
 
They lost for the same old reason they have been losing, poor defensive play. Their offense has usually been at least average or better.

They played Bama quite well this year I thought.
