I've heard the 'Stones' mentioned when I asked someone earlier. I don't see the same fandom. Do people follow the Eagles from town to town? Camp out for weekends? My Dead experience was a multi-day event in ATL.

There's a difference between a fan base and traveling deadheads. Parrotheads numbered in greater numbers in Buffet's heyday, but the dead edge him in overall ticket sales. Some traveled, but most were unique attenders who attended local shows.
For domestic paid concerts, George Strait supplanted them and now holds the number one and three records for a single show attendance, then Garth Brooks. In terms of overall attendance for a tour, the Dead isn't in the top 40. They sit at number 10 for career ticket sales, behind Kenny Chesney and just ahead of Trans-Siberian Orchestra. TSO may have passed the Dead by now. Who is ahead of Chesney? Billy Joel, Bon Jovi, Metallica, Elton John, Bruce Springsteen, Rolling Stones, Dave Matthews and U2.
My youngest and his buddies use to go to most of the concerts for Widespread Panic whenever they were anywhere in Alabama and a few in Nashville and Atlanta. They were Spread Heads.
