Two Alabama Football Players Earn SEC Honors

W stands for win, which Alabama has become accustomed to delivering. It also stands for Williams and for Waddle, which Crimson Tide fans can expect to hear plenty about based on their performances in Bama’s season-opening game.

Alabama nose tackle Quinnen Williams made his first start for the Crimson Tide in Saturday’s 51-14 victory over Louisville in Orlando. Jaylen Waddle was one of 10 Bama freshmen who saw action in that game. Both made the most of it and therefore were recognized for weekly honors from the Southeastern Conference, announced by the league Monday morning.

Waddle was named the SEC’s Freshman of the Week, while Williams earned Co-Defensive Lineman of the Week for the No. 1-ranked Crimson Tide.

Williams, a 6-4, 289-pound third-year sophomore from Birmingham, was taking over in the middle of the defensive line for former Bama star DaRon Payne, and playing between all-star candidates Raekwon Davis and Isaiah Buggs. Williams filled the Payne shoes admirably. In a shutdown performance by the Tide against Louisville in which the Cardinals had only 16 yards rushing in 26 attempts, Williams led the Alabama defense in tackles and tackles for loss. He was in on six total tackles, 3 ½ of which went for a loss of 12 yards. Both those numbers were career highs for Williams. He also contributed a pass break-up and a quarterback pressure.

Waddle was effective on multiple fronts in his first college football game, earning the start as Alabama’s punt return man and also serving in a back-up role at wide receiver. He is a 5-10, 177-pound speedster from Houston. He contributed four punt returns for 80 yards with a long of 31 (a touchdown return was wiped out by a penalty) and had three pass receptions for 66 yards. Waddle was the first wide receiver to play after Alabama’s star-studded trio of Henry Ruggs III, DeVonta Smith, and Jerry Jeudy. Waddle had a long reception of 49 yards to set up a one-yard touchdown run by Najee Harris for Alabama’s third score of the game as the Tide built a 28-0 lead at halftime and 34-0 advantage early in the game.

Williams and Waddle were also named to the Alabama coaches’ player of the week list announced earlier. Also on that list were quarterback Tua Tagovailoa, offensive tackle Jonah Williams, safety Deionte Thompson, and special teams standouts Keaton Anderson and Josh Jacobs.

Historically in the 12-year Nick Saban Era of Alabama football, in which the Crimson Tide has dominated in team performance with national and conference championships, Bama players have also been rewarded with everything from weekly team awards to the Heisman Trophy and other top individual honors.

Alabama returns to action Saturday with its Bryant-Denny Stadium debut. The Tide will host Arkansas Stateat 2:35 p.m. CDT with ESPN2 televising the game.

Alabama Coaching Staff Recognizes Seven Players of the Week following Win over Louisville

Two apiece on offense and defense with three selections on special teams

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The Alabama coaching staff selected seven players of the week following the Crimson Tide's 51-14 season-opening win over Louisville last Saturday in the Camping World Kickoff at Camping World Stadium in Orlando, Fla. Tua Tagovailoa and Jonah Williams on offense, Deionte Thompson and Quinnen Williamson defense, and Keaton Anderson, Josh Jacobs and Jaylen Waddle on special teams all earned recognition for their performances against the Cardinals.

Tagovailoa, in his first start as a member of the Crimson Tide, accounted for 253 yards and three touchdowns. The sophomore quarterback completed 75 percent of his passes (12-16) for 227 yards and two scores while adding 26 yards rushing and a touchdown on five carries. Tagovailoa averaged 18.9 yards per completion and helped Alabama to a 10.5 yards per play average and five touchdowns on the six drives that he directed. The offense was aided by another strong performance up front from left tackle Jonah Williams. The junior graded out at a team-high 92 percent and missed only one assignment on 59 snaps with six knockdown blocks. He did not commit a penalty or allow any pressure on the Tide quarterbacks while helping to open holes that allowed Alabama's rushing attack to accumulate 222 yards and three touchdowns.

On defense, Thompson, a junior, led all Alabama players in production points and finished with five tackles, 1.5 of which went for a loss. He added three pass breakups and contributed one of the Tide's two interceptions on the night, returning the pick out of the Louisville endzone for a 25-yard gain. Williams was dominant up front in his first career start, leading the Crimson Tide defense in tackles and tackles for loss. The redshirt sophomore accounted for six total tackles, 3.5 of which went for a loss (-12 yards). He added one pass breakup and a quarterback hurry to his totals and anchored a defensive front that limited the Cardinals to just 16 rushing yards across 26 attempts.

Anderson, a redshirt junior, once again directed the Tide punt teams and graded out near the top of the special teams charts. Jacobs returned his only kickoff of the game for a 77-yard touchdown run to help UA put the game out of reach. The junior tailback graded out at 93 percent on his 14 special teams snaps across punt return, kick return and kickoff coverage. The freshman Waddle was effective on special teams in his first career game at Alabama, returning four punts for 80 yards with a long return of 31 yards.

I give our defense a lot of kudos for the effort against a Petrino offense with a very credible QB. But where were our LBers on some of those cross patterns and dump downs? Mack Wilson, in particular, had a poor night in coverage.
