Alabama at Georgia
Well that was fun, wasn't it? Three out of the first four weeks were predictable, but none to the level of Arkansas. The Trickle Down index produced a perfect prediction of 49-14, and now it is up to Arkansas to see if they can overcome the second part of that prediction - that they go winless the rest of the season.
On to Georgia.
The 2008 Georgia Bulldogs easily represent the biggest challenge for Alabama thus far. After starting the season ranked #1 in the land, the voters dropped Georgia due to less than impressive wins over Georgia Southern, and South Carolina. Still, coming in at #3 is a respectable position, and Georgia is still receiving 2 first place votes in both polls. The drop from week one to two was probably due to USC’s complete domination of Virginia, rather than UGA’s performance against a FCS foe. The weak showing against USC, combined with OU’s demolition of Washington on the road, caused the second slip. Regardless of the why, you hate to see a team lose ground when they win, and that is exactly what UGA has been doing.
In the trickle down area, UGA is the “top dog” from which weaker teams get thrown bones…that is to say, they don’t get the second hand recruits. According to Scout, Georgia’s recruiting class has ranked in the top six in four of the past five years (04-06, 08). The only “down” class was 2007, and even that class was well stacked. Trickle down doesn’t really apply with UGA.
