Alabama at Georgia

Well that was fun, wasn't it? Three out of the first four weeks were predictable, but none to the level of Arkansas. The Trickle Down index produced a perfect prediction of 49-14, and now it is up to Arkansas to see if they can overcome the second part of that prediction - that they go winless the rest of the season.

On to Georgia.

The 2008 Georgia Bulldogs easily represent the biggest challenge for Alabama thus far. After starting the season ranked #1 in the land, the voters dropped Georgia due to less than impressive wins over Georgia Southern, and South Carolina. Still, coming in at #3 is a respectable position, and Georgia is still receiving 2 first place votes in both polls. The drop from week one to two was probably due to USC’s complete domination of Virginia, rather than UGA’s performance against a FCS foe. The weak showing against USC, combined with OU’s demolition of Washington on the road, caused the second slip. Regardless of the why, you hate to see a team lose ground when they win, and that is exactly what UGA has been doing.

In the trickle down area, UGA is the “top dog” from which weaker teams get thrown bones…that is to say, they don’t get the second hand recruits. According to Scout, Georgia’s recruiting class has ranked in the top six in four of the past five years (04-06, 08). The only “down” class was 2007, and even that class was well stacked. Trickle down doesn’t really apply with UGA.

Just when I had prepared myself to be patient and not have too many expectations for this game, it all just got tossed out the window. Heck it's been since 1992 that I was this excited about a Bama game with a realistic shot at a win so I will just go with it. Roll Tide!!!

Excellent write-up. Puts things into a good perspective. I like our chances more and more.

I have learned my lesson, BF.

This one is MUCH harder to predict than Arky. Arkansas was EASY...Clemson was almost as easy.

I am going with my favorite, but I could see a +/- 7 point swing on either team...in other words, Bama could lose 28-24, or win 38-14 (or somewhere in-between). I see 31-21 as the most likely scenario for a number of reasons...and admittedly my heart is one of them.

The other thing is, Georgia is a lot like Clemson with a bit better OL, and much better coaching. Great RB - Check...Hypesman candidate QB - Check....Stud receiver - check...5 new starters on the OL - almost check...solid defense with a few questions in the backfield - check

UGA is a LOT better than Clemson, but there are enough similarities to lead me to believe that Bama can win this.

Had to do a bit of an edit...I just noticed in the stats from last week that Chris Davis had been moved back to Guard, and true freshman Ben Jones is now starting at Center. That does NOT bode well for UGA. I know that I am a homer, but a true freshman center in his second start going against our DL? I see a lot of problems for UGA's OL. This game is shaping up to be very clemson-esque. I honestly feel that at this point it is NOT about UGA any more...it is about us. If we can take care of our own business we will walk out of athens very happy.

Do you take:

A. 6'3 / 304# True Frosh with a 370 bench and 500# squat - who has started 1 game...

B. 6'5 / 365# JUCO all-American, with a 500# bench and 800# squat - in his 5th start at D1 after starting for 2 years on the JUCO NC team.

I take B.

FWIW, that line-up on their OL is contingent of whether Kiante Tripp, injured last week (ankle,) is back in the lineup.

I haven't been able to find out one way or the other so far...

Thats what threw me as well, but rumors I have gleened seem to indicate that Tripp is unlikely. If he plays, Alabama's DL is better than Georgia's OL. If he is out, it is a mismatch up front - close to the level of Clemson. A true frosh at center is not a good thing.

very good read Big_Fan. I like our chances. Georgia deserves the accolades they've gotten this year. They are talented, well coached and have depth.

We are talented, well coached and don't have nearly the depth they do. I hope our starters stay healthy this week and during the game. With the difference in depth, I think it could also be the difference in the game if someones has to sit out.

Roll Tide!

I don't know. This is the Jones kid from Centreville, AL that we either "let" get away or that UGA "stole" from out from under us.

He will play with lots of emotion just based on the fact that it's Alabama.

Last year before our game all we heard was how young their line was, yet they more than held their own. If memory serves me right they didn't get ONE penalty the entire game. On the other side of that though is we didn't have the line last year that we have this year.

The article is a very good possibility. We will run on them and that will open up the rest of our playbook and we will do a few things different i.e. go down the field. Georgia wont know what hit them.
