| NEWS Travaris Robinson: Assistant Coach / Defensive Backs (Miami bio)

He was hired at Miami in January of 2021.

Travaris Robinson, who spent the past five seasons as defensive coordinator / defensive backs coach at South Carolina, will join the Miami Hurricanes football staff as defensive backs coach, head coach Manny Diaz announced. Robinson’s hire is pending completion of a standard University background check.

Regarded as one of the top recruiters in the country, Robinson, known as “T-Rob,” is a Miami native who boasts 15 years of college coaching experience.

“We are excited to welcome Travaris and his family back to Miami,” Diaz said. “He is a proven defensive coach and an excellent recruiter who will be an outstanding addition to our coaching staff.”

Last season Robinson mentored defensive lineman Kingsley Enagbare, a first-team All-SEC selection, and defensive back Jaycee Horn, a second-team All-SEC pick. In 2019, the South Carolina defense – led by first-team All-American defensive tackle Javon Kinlaw – held its opponents to 20 points or less in five games. Sophomore cornerback Israel Mukuamu earned second-team All-SEC honors, while Jammie Robinson and Zacch Pickens earned SEC All-Freshman accolades for the Gamecocks in 2019.

In 2017 South Carolina led the SEC and ranked ninth in the country with 28 turnovers forced, while ranking 25th in points allowed per game at 20.7. The Gamecocks held 11 of 13 opponents to fewer points than their season average. South Carolina tied for 10th in the nation in turnovers forced with 27 during the 2016 campaign, including 15 interceptions.

Robinson spent five seasons coaching defensive backs before arriving in Columbia, S.C. as defensive coordinator – first at Florida (2011-14), then at Auburn (2015). The former Auburn Tiger standout began his coaching career at his alma mater, first as a staff assistant in 2006 while finishing up his undergraduate degree, then as a GA in 2007.

Robinson spent one season each as a defensive backs coach at Western Kentucky (2008), Southern Miss (2009) and Texas Tech (2010) before joining the Florida staff.

In his first season at Florida in 2011, Robinson guided a UF secondary that ranked seventh in the nation in pass defense (166.8), while the Gator defense ranked eighth nationally in total defense (299.5).

Robinson led a secondary that was one of the best in the nation in 2012, ranking No. 2 in pass efficiency defense (95.55) and allowing just seven touchdown passes – the second-fewest in the nation. Florida had 20 interceptions on the season, good for seventh nationally while safety Matt Elam was a first-team All-America selection and first-round draft pick.

In 2013, Robinson’s secondary was seventh nationally in passing defense and eighth in passing efficiency defense, while the defensive unit was eight in total defense. Under Robinson, Vernon Hargreaves III was a freshman All-SEC and freshman All-America pick while being named the National Freshman Defensive Player of the Year by College Football News.

In 2014 at Florida, Robinson again tutored Hargreaves III, who was a first-team All-SEC pick and named first-team All-America. Jalen Tabor received freshman All-America and freshman All-SEC honors. The Gators defense finished the 2014 regular season ranked ninth nationally in total defense, 14th in pass efficiency defense and 23rd in passing defense.

At Texas Tech, he helped the Red Raiders to an 8-5 record and a TicketCity Bowl victory over Northwestern. In his one season at Tech, Robinson had two defensive backs earn All-Big 12 Honorable Mention recognition and a third that was named a freshman All-America honorable mention.

His 2009 Southern Miss squad finished in the top four in Conference USA in pass efficiency defense, interceptions and yards per pass attempt, and he coached First Team All-C-USA selection Eddie Hicks.

Before embarking on his coaching career, Robinson played two seasons in the NFL with the Atlanta Falcons and Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Auburn posted a 30-19 record during his playing career, including a top-20 ranking in the final polls after his senior season. He was selected the MVP of the Iron Bowl after recording 12 tackles and breaking up a pair of passes to help the Tigers to a 13-9 victory over Alabama, as they would go on to defeat Penn State in the Capital One Bowl. He was a first-team AP All-SEC selection after collecting 92 total tackles, second on the squad, with four interceptions. He concluded his collegiate career with 166 tackles and five picks.

Robinson was born in Miami and attended Coral Park High where he was a four-year letterman and earned all-state honors as a defensive back and wide receiver. He received his bachelor’s degree in mass communications from Auburn in 2007.

Robinson is married to the former Mandisa Skyers; their family includes sons, Tyson Jerod and Travis Jerod, and daughter, Jordyn.

Alabama football has found its new defensive backs coach and is expected to hire Travaris Robinson. Robinson played in the NFL with the Falcons, Tampa Bay, and again in Atlanta again in 2004 joins Alabama from Miami. Robinson was with the Hurricanes for one season as their defensive backs coach before being at South Carolina as the defensive coordinator and the defensive backs coach from 2020-16. Robinson has also made stops in Auburn, Florida, Texas Tech, Southern Miss, and Western Kentucky. Robinson replaces Jay Valai who coached the defensive backs at Alabama for the 2021 season.

There's a handful of guys out there that if Saban hired as a defensive backs coach I'd say, "good hire." Mike Elko, who we saw at A&M for a few years (now Duke head coach) is a secondary guy: Barry Odom is cut of the same cloth. Having either of these two with Charles Kelly and it's arguably the best secondary coaching staff in the nation.

IF I would have heard "Saban just hired Corey Raymond?" That's a great hire. And now, if all goes as we're seeing it break, Saban pulls Travaris Robinson?

When I mentioned the text message yesterday about the AU mod on 247 saying he was expecting this move? It was a "ya gotta be kidding." To me, it's an "eye-brow raiser." Damn good hire.

I really like the combo of Kelly/Robinson on skill players.

{tempted to surf around to see conference opponents fans reactions.}

He has been a job hopper but maybe he will find a home with us.

He wants to be a HC and having Saban on the resume certainly helps that. I doubt he will be at UA long, but while he's there it'll be beneficial to him and very beneficial to Alabama. He's an ace recruiter who knows how to get it done. He also adds some really good experience to the defensive staff (former defensive coordinator under the guy who just happens to run UGA's defense now).

TRob is an outstanding hire IMO and a HELLUVA recruiter! He is a Miami guy and he gives us that continued foot in the South Florida area even with Cristobal at Miami now. He did a pretty good job at USCe with Muschamp and he also knows Muschamps tendencies, so a little chess being played for any future contests with the Dawgs.
Cole Cubelic was raving about him this morning and they were former teammates at the Barn. Cole called it a HUGE get for BAMA.

We haven’t exactly faced top passing teams this year and have benefited from some starting QBs missing time. Ewers and Hooker are the 2 good QB’s we’ve faced. Both lit us up like a Yankee Candle. I mean Jefferson is averaging about 208 per game and we held him to 155. Wouldn’t call him a strong passer this year.

Jefferson is not a terrible passer and what makes him difficult is his running threat - you have to play 11 on 11 vs. a guy like him. He also shakes off tackles that would be sure sacks on others and delivers first down passes downfield. I was impressed with him. They missed him badly when he was hurt and then Arkansas lost to Miss St. But they rebounded last week smacking around BYU with KJ back.

Agree, he averages about 60 YPG rushing. My point was, we haven’t done so good in pass coverage against the 2 strong passers we’ve faced. Jefferson isn’t bad/terrible, but he’s not a great passer this year. Ewers and Hooker are the only 2 I can think of that we’ve faced. And both had career days (Ewers a career quarter before getting hurt).

Can't argue with that. I knew both of those would be bad matchups due to Sark's knowledge of the D from his time at Alabama and Tennessee's success in dictating favorable matchups last year.

Miss St has undeniably a good passing offense, but I don't expect the same issues do to their system.

After that, we can see how the D matches up with LSU after the bye, and then at Ole Miss and another former OC who knows the defensive system inside and out.

This doesn't make sense.... you're basing on one bad game and before Tennessee, defense was playing well.
No I'm not only considering one game. Not sure how you can divine what's in my head. I'm simply asking a question. Terry was optimistic from the beginning about our CB coach, and I know nothing about him.
