I will add a qualifier to this post since I really do not know much about these guys but a general comment, are Utah State and Ball State places you expect to find the best talent from the portal? I am sure there will be some diamonds in the rough but seems like a statistical long shot. Put these moves in the category I hope my bias is fully shown to be wrong.

It can happen... this particular lineman from Ball State is very raw and has very little football experience at any level. But, there is potential there and it's a low risk, high reward type signing. It'll provide needed depth and not cause any of the other tackles to bolt. And if they can develop him into a contributor? Who knows down the road what happens. Dude certainly has the frame and I'd be willing to bet based on his background he's smart as hell and works his tail off.

Not an angle I have considered. Take someone on based on raw potential that will certainly be happy to be at Bama and could add depth. I was thinking of it in terms of needing starters. An avenue to creat depth at very little cost I guess. I am used to seeing studs at Bama not projects but with NIL in terms of how you think about depth I may need to adjust that thinking. It falls under the umbrella of does it really matter if you get a bunch of 4 and 5 starts if half of them bolt after year one?

On a related note: We're seeing that happen right now with a projected starter for next season: tight end, Josh (can't think of how to spell his last name: Cuaves...something like that.) He was an FCS guy, pulled through the portal to UW, and then to UA with CKD. A good chance he's in a starting role next season.

There was a lineman in the title game last year for Michigan whose "collegiate route" was much the same. Look at the MVP of the title game last year. It's not Graham Norton (I know, talk show guy) but that's close.

That's interesting but semi-weird approach you're talking with this one. Look at ton of players who came to Bama with 3 stars who exceled at Alabama, NFL and etc.

Alabama DE Jayshawn Ross is expected to enter his name into the NCAA Transfer Portal. On3’s Pete Nakos has confirmed those intentions this morning.

If you go back to its original intent it still makes sense.

A three star should be contributing by his third year in the program. A four, his second. A five, immediately.

All three are considered probable contributors: how soon is where the differences were originally drawn. (I guess the 'five star +' means they need to skip their senior year of high school. )

He wasn’t on the field the first offensive play in game 1 and I don’t think in the first series. At least from what I remember. We’ve had other freshman have big first games in game one of their freshman years. Yeldon comes to mind in that opener against Michigan in 2012, which was Amari’s first game also, but neither started the game. I believe Amari still owns the freshman receiving record (yards) when he passed Julio in 2012. Williams was on a pace to well surpass that until the second half of the season got in the way. He had 540 yards through 5 games but ended with 865 (325 in the last 8 games).
