As portal season gets cranked up, and we aren't even into the bottom of the 1st inning yet, here's a reminder that as far as Bama goes, some transferring names will likely be surprising some, others, not so much. There will most certainly be a small number that enter that Bama tries to hang onto, that also happened under Saban. The majority though will be guys that probably need a fresh start, for various reasons. And for UA, some of it will be addition by subtraction. One promising note on all this is the fact that last time around, even while DeBoer and is staff were handcuffed by portal limitations, they went out and got key pieces who proved to be very significant contributors in the spots they targeted. Bernard was fantastic at WR. Brailsford was All-SEC level at center. Cuevas was an important depth piece at TE. Sabb was a day 1 starter and played well until his injury. Overton came in and contributed right away, he had nearly 30 QB hurries on the season. DaShawn Jones was a much needed, and solid, depth piece at corner. King Mack, another solid depth player that was much needed for this fall... he played over 200 snaps this season. Needed a kicker, they grabbed the Lou Groza award winner. Point here is, they didn't really have swings and misses. They knew what they wanted and what they'd likely get with each one of those portal additions. This time around, the pool will be bigger and deeper. The handcuffs are off, and the staff will have an even better feel of what they want and what they need to bring in after a full season of coaching and managing the roster. So, yes, Bama will lose some guys. Some fans will fret over it. But it's going to be an equal or better player that they are replace with... sit tight, and let it unfold.
