Baldwin with Mario Cristobal
Charles Baldwin, offensive tackle from ASA College in Brooklyn, N.Y., spent three days in Tuscaloosa this past week (Thursday-Saturday). The visit was enough for him to know where he wants to continue his college career.
"I thought there was a chance I would go ahead and commit," said Baldwin. "Coach Cristobal played a major part. I feel really comfortable with him. I know he can help take my playing skills to the next level.
"I told Coach Saban I was ready to commit. Our conversation was really good. He talked about their need for offensive linemen. He said their right tackle is leaving after this year. They need someone to come in and play right away.
"I am really looking forward to the opportunity. I'm looking forward to getting there in early January ready to work. I am ready to work hard to be a better player every day."
The 6-foot-6, 305-pound lineman has formed a great bond with Coach Mario Cristobal. His relationship with the Tide's offensive line coach helped with the decision.
"Coach Cristobal is a cool dude," he said. "He has always been up-front and honest. He doesn't BS you. That's what I really like about him.
"What really stands out to me about Alabama is how much they are like a family. They accepted me with open arms. The coaches and the players are like a big family to me.
"I love the discipline and commitment to the program the players have. The players are always on time for everything. The program is always in good running order."
What stood out the most of the first visit to Tuscaloosa?
"Just being able to talk to Coach Cristobal and then talk to Coach Saban," Baldwin said. "They really need offensive linemen there. I was able to see it first hand from looking at the depth chart. They need someone who can come in and play right away.
"I really love it there. It's an amazing place. It reminds of home. I don't really like the city life. It's a nice, country type of place."
Baldwin will major in Criminal Justice at Alabama. He does not plan to take any additional visits.
"I am just looking forward to going down there and being taught," he said. "I know they will develop me into a great player. I am going to bring intensity and athleticism to the offensive line."
