🏈 Top 5 Reasons Bama Rolls the Hogs

Everyone is picking you guys in Saturday's contest, with good reasons.

As I've read around the recent blogs and articles, these seem to be the top 5 reasons given by the pundits in picking the Tide .

(I include my counter-arguments, as to why this will be a tight game, not a blow-out.)

I expect it will be another good game like last year.

#1 Arkansas too one dimensional since losing Knile Davis.

I believe we were actually more one-dimensional last year than this year. Last year, we lost our top RB, Dennis Johnson, just prior to facing you, and had not established Davis or anyone else at that point. We got caught without much of a run game and could not run late when we needed to. This year we have Dennis Johnson back, a better Ronnie Wingo, plus De'Anthony Curtis and Kody Walker. We are far better off at RB this go round then last. Add we have too very mobile QBs as well now, not a statue in the pocket. Our rush yards should be better.

#2 Arkansas Defense stuggled with Troy.

We've played extremely vanilla all year, a luxury afforded to us by a weak schedule. Yet, through the first 11 quarters of cupcakes, our opponents had scored 17 total points, far better than we have done in year's past with similar cupcakes. After building a 31-7 against Troy, we let up, and a spread offense, which our D isn't built to stop, got a couple of shots in late.

Arkansas's D has been built to stop teams like yourself and LSU, Saturday will be the first test of how well we have done in that dept. We've got the size, strength and depth now on the DL and LBs. Like our situation at RB, it's an improvement over last year at this point.

#3 Alabama's Defense too strong.

Your defense is too strong to beat conventionally. Excellent athletes, plus excellent coaching by a crafty schemer.

Fortunately we have a schemer as well, who scripted our one dimensional offense to a 20-7 lead last year.

Bobby know how good you guys are, and I imagine he'll try to script something to start Saturday's game where your D will hurt us the least.

Very vanilla on offense so far this year, and watching tape from last year can only help so much. This year Petrino has two very mobile QBs (a QB draw is now back in the playbook, post-Mallett), a stable of hungry backs, including one proven SEC stud in Johnson (who I think has been saved specifically for this game.)
And perhaps the best WR corp in the nation with Adams, Wright, Hamilton and Childs).

Petrino has more offensive versatility this year over last.

#4 Arkansas lost Ryan Mallett to the Draft.

Mallett may have been a liability in last year's game, due to the 3 INTs he threw, he wasn't neccesarily an asset. His off shoulder was still injured and it affected his velocity on his deep passes. Our offense was more of a big play offense last year, and we couldn't "big play" enough time off the clock with the lead.

This year, we have more of a ball control offense that still carries big play potential. Our first 3 possesions against Troy we had 31 plays, 270 yards, 3 80 yard TD drives, burning 11 minutes off the clock, mostly mixing the short pass and run game.

No one can sling it like Mallett, but with Wilson being mobile and being able to make almost every throw Mallett made, we are more versitile.

#5 Alabama is the better team across the board.

Arkansas has closed the gap every year under Petrino, the gap is closed again this year. Overall, you probably still deserve the edge when all depth is considered. The matchups we will be able to put on the field against you, athlete versus athlete for four quarters, will be better than it has been in quite some time.

I'm confident The Hogs can win, I know we can lose too, should be a great one.

A few thoughts in response.

i know Dennis Johnson was your starter before, but Knile Davis is a much better RB.

i listened to a good bit of the Troy game and your secondary had struggles stopping Troy's passing game at various times throughout the game from my recollection (although i did have a few rum and cokes at that point and was celebrating the aubs loss). Bama's passing game certainly will be as good or better than Troy's and we actually have a decent run game to go with it so... it will be a challenge for your D to say the least.

i believe Wilson is a far better QB than Mallett. IMHO wilson playing a stellar game is your only hope of winning.

Bama has also played very vanilla on offense and defense. Nothing really crazy scheme wise on either side of the ball so far this year. I am sure Bama will have a few wrinkles to throw at Arky also. I just do not know if Wilson is better than Mallett. We will see as the season rolls on.
Bama's group of wide receivers is actually better than last years and seem to be improving each game.(they are a bit underrated imo and seem to loaded with skill) Will be a close one either way.

Man, "vanilla" is a word being thrown around a lot for this game. It's getting old like the word "process" that coaches and the media use.

Have these coaches brought out everything? No, because Saban and Petrino are both smart and knew they would win the first 3 games.

Now, you can bet that Arkansas looked past Troy to Alabama. Especially in the second half. You play up to your opponent and they cruised the second half. In the long run, that's in the Razorbacks favor if you give it some thought.

I have studied and watched Arkansas football for years. Plus, many of you know I coached and worked from NAIA to NCAA Division 1 schools.

What I'm saying is this....Petrino is very brilliant when it comes to preparation as Saban is too.

He will use that second half of Troy to his advantage the best he can.

I just don't see a lot of points scored in this game.

If I were Alabama I would throw it to open the run, but they may not have to do that. Arkansas will throw to open the run for sure.

Remember, how fast Arkansas scored last year? Look for Petrino to find that weakness again early. Wilson is not a bad QB. He reminds me a lot of the ones you guys have had over the years. Not flashy, but gets the job done.

I am on my iPhone and using your app. I hope this goes through and is in the right place.

[ADMIN EDIT:] Chris, the thanks is for what I've bolded. [/ADMIN EDIT]

.

Not at the stage we played you last year, Davis was ineffective at that point and didn't hit his stride until week 5.

we'll be less one-dimensional this year than last, we had no-one last year to pick up a few tough yards and run clock at the end of last year's game.

Dennis Johnson has come through in big games before, when we were facing defenses predicted to stop our run, torching LSU in '08 and Florida in '09, it killed us not having him last year in Fayetteville. Wingo may be about to hit his stride (like Davis did) and new additions Curtis and Walker are upgrades from last year when we met. We have 4 backs we are confident in, last year maybe one and a half.

IMHO wilson playing a stellar game is your only hope of winning.

He has to avoid a lot of mistakes and distribute the ball, he has a lot of weapons and is going to have a lot of help.

look for Rocket Ishmal....I mean Joe Adams, in the backfield a lot.

Nah, I'd rather look for Charles Woodson....I mean Mark Barron, Dre' Kirkpatrick, Robert Lester, etc... Any of those sound familiar? I don't know that Alabama has to have int.'s this year to win, but we have to have stellar DB play. No taking plays off or loafing. Wilson will be pressured and hurried into what hopefully are Alabama hands.

Now lets be realistic Hawg Fans...

Dennis Johnson hasn't shown anything yet.... He still hasnt played over 6 snaps since his bowel ruptured last season... Wingo??? Cmon now... still hits that hole tentatively... at best.

Our Backfield doesn't stack up to bamas by a long shot.

If we win it will be through the air.... etc...

and yes.. Bamas Corners/back field players are very good....

I just pray for no bust in coverages.

It's going to happen; more than once.

Changing the subject, a bit...

No one has mentioned it but the fact our defense put a shut out up last week speaks volumes. VOLUMES.

We're playing backups. Not a starter on the field. And, held them for seven tries at 1st and goal.

I see you failing to mention the big uglies...3 newbies on the OL? I'll admit I haven't watched an Arkansas game this year to judge them...how they gonna do come Saturday?

Not vanilla. That's for sure.

There is no such thing as vanilla when a coach has been in a program for three years. A trick play or two? Sure. A different formation? Sure. But, vanilla...?~!?!?!?!?

There is no such thing.

Conservative I'll give ya.

like three very good, capable, and inexperienced newbies usually do on a saturday....

Weakness for sure... but coming along nicely for the future...

Look, im a homer.. but very realistic. I see the Razorback program for what it is... On the rise from the ashes left in the dumpster fire nutt left us with... Just look at ole miss and see what happens. But Bobby Petrino is a very capable and great coach. Our Recruiting is difficult road for us... and we must coach up, build up our team with the strength and cond. program in order to compete with those who have an easier path to recruits. Here is where we are now... We are not ever going to be a cakewalk for anyone again.... But we are still a top 3 sec team, not 2, or top... and it is a difficult road.

Consider this.. We could quite possibly be top 10 at the end of the season and still be the 2nd or 3rd team in the sec west... Unbelievable..

This is why I believe we should show more respect towards our top few programs. Where we have been... Bama with Shula, price fiasco... and now a behemoth...AR with the Nutt years.. and now nothing to sneeze at...

But to be the man, you have to beat the man... We have LSU, Etc... Bama... NOT YET... will it happen... Perhaps in the future.. WPS!

Bama wins this game by at *least* 3 touchdowns. Maybe more.

Arkansas is not overrated...14th or thereabouts is probably very accurate.

They ARE EXTREMELY over-hyped.

Thursday...still better than previously, but starting to resemble the late week scenario...

My OL comment was more that the Original poster failed to address a key part of the Arkansas game in my opinion. The WR's are just window dressing if Wilson can't get the ball out.

just odd that there was zero speak of it when comparing the Bama D to the arkansas O

Yep, preparing myself now. We'll take some risks on D and hopefully it will pay off more than not.

I didn't quote the other part of your statement, but I'm excited about our future D. Even for them to be in a game at this point (many of them freshmen and yes I know it was North Texas) speaks volumes about Saban's belief in them now and in the future. Saban doesn't waste a shirt for nothin'.

Hogs up and running for another chance

http://espn.go.com/blog/sec

The fact is that Arkansas didn’t have a running game, at least not at that point, which is a big reason the Hogs couldn’t hold onto a two-touchdown lead and finish the game.

When the Hogs needed to run the ball and protect their lead, they couldn’t. They managed just 13 rushing yards on seven attempts in the second half, leaving the door open for the Crimson Tide to come storming back.

“We still haven’t gotten over that, the way we had them and just couldn’t close the deal,” said Arkansas junior running back Ronnie Wingo. “We got the blame for that loss, the running backs, and maybe we should have. If you can’t run the ball, it’s going to be hard to beat those guys. I’m just glad we get another chance.”

It's a concern, I should have listed it.

I have confidence CBP knows what he's got and what he can do with it.

I think we'll be OK running with the new O-line, all Wilson has to do is get the ball out quick to the playmakers.
